Long rides equal weight gain
It seems I lose more weight on my 15-20 mile rides as opposed to my 50-100 mile rides. I find I am eating to keep from bonking and what I eat and drink has more calories than what I am burning by slow touring type riding. Any thoughts on this?

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Here's a good tool for caloric burn calculation for cycling activity: https://www.kreuzotter.de/english/espeed.htm
This site takes into account wind, slope, Bike geometry, wheel and tire size and body weight. Use it in good health! I've found it to be a great training aid!

Hooked on Touring
The real clincher is when you take a long tour - a month or more - and get back to the rat-race routine. Your body is screaming for all those calories, but you just ain't burning them no more, no more. I have fought weight gain after every summer tour.

Bikes: highly modified specialized crossroads and GT hybrid (really a [formerly] 12-speed bmx cruiser, made before 'hybrid' took on its current meaning), as yet unmodified redline 925, couple of other projects

if you're regularly riding 50-100 miles, you probably don't need to worry about your weight so much.

when i just went on my 5 day 400 mile tour I was astonished to see that I gained 5 pounds!!!!! for whatever reason though, once my body had a chance to rest for a few days and get back to normal, my weight immediately dropped back down... probably has to do with the major increase in fluids and foods consumed during the long trips...

I lost a ton of weight in just 2 weeks. I didn't starve myself, but felt like eating much healthier food, and not really all that much. I totally agree with the idea one should not try to diet on a trip, too much physicality, but when camping often there isn't much food around. If you are doing credit card tour with restaurants and all that jazz, then I can see how one would blow up.

over the last 3 weeks I've been turning myself into not a hill wuss. I've dropped 8 lbs(I weigh 142 normally) due to not eating all that well, ie wake up: coffee get on bike at 7 am. ride hard in the hills till dusk(7pm) then go eat and drink.
Graham's no food lots of beer lots of exercise diet, it works I swear!
