Yes, matching is important. However, silver is much classier than black.

Do you want your components to all be silver, or black? Does it matter?

Of course things have to match. And I won't ride with people who don't name their bikes.

As a related issue, I get much better service when I take my mountain or touring bike into the store than my commuter frankenbike.

The mechanics always seem to go the extra mile on a bike that is pleasing to the eye (even if touring is plainly not their thing) where the frankenbike gets the bare minimum to get it rolling again.

Look after your bike and your bike will look after you.

I try to keep items matching, but not to an extreme extent. I prefer the silver or aluminum color over black, even on my black bike. Function comes before color.

Don't care and it's obvious.

Black rear der., silver front der., black levers, silver cantis, black rims, silver hubs, silver seatpost, black stem, yellow handlebar bag, black front panniers and red rear panniers. I guess I must be insane.
