    Photo Storage methods

I'll probably shoot over 900 photos on our next tour and won't be keeping them on the compact flash cards. For backing them up I just picked bought a 60GB, battery powered hard drive that has the ability to read cards. While it can be used as an external hard drive, it doesn't require a computer to operate.

I haven't had the chance to test it but will in this final month before we head for the hills of Swizterland. I'm also thinking about taking a small laptop computer but haven't fully commited to the idea.

There are many options for storing digital images while on the road. Seemingly more and more everyday. What's your storage & backup approach?

I cary my fujitsu P1120 with a cell modem card (VZW National Access), but thats a bit much for most people. 13hrs battery life is enough for a week without an AC jack (used every day with a high capacity and normal capacity battery)
I used to use my archos av420, 20GB media player with a CF slot. I like having the laptop though, lets me check weather for a longer period, make sure no one's died, post to a website so i don't have to talk to everyone, and, worst case, (never had to do it yet) order parst on line and have em drop shipped ahead of me.

I just make CDs as I go... in developing countries, internet cafes can do that... in Europe or North America, you can get that option at many camera stores... even some grocery stores!

I get 400 full resolution images on my 1GB CF card with a 5 megapixel camera. Now you can get 2GB cards for the same price as I paid for the 1GB. 2x1GB cards are only a couple of dollars more than a single 2GB card so I am collecting them instead.

By summer (southern hemisphere) I will have 4x1gb cards, enough for a week spending more time taking photos than riding, even if I upgrade the camera to one that writes bigger files. I have never had a glitch with CF cards but I figure, why have all your eggs on one flashcard?

On the other hand, as an IT technician, I go through 2-3 portable hard drives a year due to wear, tear and getting knocked around. The photo tanks like you have look neat for extended touring, but I wouldn't trust them more than solid state. Get a pelican case for this gizmo.
