Bikes on a Bus

The last time we had to put our bikes on a bus here in Thailand this is what it looked like...

Tomorrow morning we will be putting our bikes on a bus once again for another short ride...and I want to avoid pancaking them underneath if possible. My bike is just a little too tall to stand up in the compartment. Any suggestions?

I took my bike on buses twice in Thailand. The first time my experience was identical to your photo. However, since my bike was a folding Bike Friday, it didn't matter. The second time, I was told to simply take my bike on the bus thru the rear door. The bus was only half full so there was plenty of space in the rear. It was a 2nd class bus, which may be why they told me to bring my bike inside the bus. So, since you said you're taking a short bus ride, my advice would be to look for an old non-air conditioned bus that's not too crowded.

In Canada - not easy. You have to send it freight and it may not go on the same bus as you. It is really expensive as well. They are definitely not encouraging anyone to do it, but if you had to you could make it work.

Greyhound in the US usually isn't a hassle as long as the bike is in a standard bike box (roughly 58x28x8) some individual greyhound contractors may hassle you. but an extra $10 in the palm usually settles disputes. Best thing about Greyhound now ( if there is anything good about greyhound) is they no longer handle baggage you have to do that yourself. so your bike stands a better chance of getting there in one piece . Just make sure you are near the front of the line when boarding to insure there is room in the baggage compartment for your bike. Last time I rode the Dog( last spring) the upcharge for the bike was $15

Thats good because Im going to tour away from home and then bike home, I was planning on taking greyhound there to the strarting point. I thought that they woul dhave bike racks on the back. I dont know if I would want my bike tossed in the bottom of a bus.

Do Thai buses have roof racks? Thats what I used when busing it in Tibet. Easy enough to get up there, and minimal chance of theft.

~Cheers from Kathmandu!~ (Next stop Thailand!)

I really like the city buses with racks. I use them pretty frequently to get around Albany NY. one of my favorite casual rides is to take the cross town bus from end to end (about 20 miles) near each end pf the bus route is a bike trail that follows the river for 27 miles back to the other end.
