    Surly Nice Racks

They arrived BY MAIL today I got them in silver. I was surprised how big they were. I have two sets of Tubus - but these seem LIKE over kill especially the front, So before I take these out of the bags and mount them I am seeking feedback. Thanks MW

I ordered a set for my Surly LHT and they came in silver rather than the black I ordered - also my LBS screwed up my quote and wanted considerably more $$$ than was originally agreed to.

I had a look at them and decided they were overly heavy and expensive for my needs so I didn't reorder them in black.

I ended up with an Old Man Mountain Red Rock rear rack. Its much lighter, looks very nice and has a lifetime warranty. I recall reading that the warranty included shipping a replacement to you on tour if yours broke, but I can't find that on their website so maybe I am mistaken or that has changed?

I haven't ordered a new front rack yet. I have an OMM set of front and rear Cold Springs racks for my Urban Assault/mtn bike tourer. I got the 700c adapters for it so that I can quickly convert it to my LHT if needed. I will eventually get another front rack that attached via the fork eyelets rather than the QR. The QR front racks are not as rigid laterally as the standard type, but on a disc equiped mtn bike the QR racks are the ticket.

If you have Tubus racks I am not sure what the Nice racks can offer you that you don't already have? Having said that the construction and design of the Nice racks seems first rate and they should be very strong.

What did you not like about your tubus racks or what did you hope to get from the Nice racks?

I have the Surly Nice on the front and the Tubus Cargo on the rear. Love them. Wouldn't change a thing. The best part is that shelf on the front rack. I fasten my lunch/cooler bag to it. Brilliant.

I ordered one here in Oz. Got told it might be 2 months. Steel racks don't exist here. All they sell us is alloy junk which breaks. I'm about to make my own. Got told the same for Tubus.

As for lifetime warranties, they are useless in the middle of the outback. What are you supposed to do when it breaks. Wait 2 months for a replacement after finding the nearest bike shop?

If you have Surly nice racks within eyesight, grab them and use them.

I forgot to mention - I ordered the Nice Racks because my new touring bike has 26 inch tires so I couldn't use my previous set of tubus racks which are set up for 700c tires. From what I gather the Nice Racks were back ordered in the US for a number of montns, but are now readily available. Price wise the Nitto's where most expensive, Tubus and Nice Rack and Old Man Mountain are similar. Like everything else you have to competitive shop - the range for nice racks online is $90 to $140 for the same racks.
