I have lived outside the US for 5 years and been through Italy twice. Now when I travel I just do a little internet searching before I leave and wing it from there. Tourist information bureaus at many train/plane/bus depots can recommend and even book lodgings for you. Get the LP guide or rough guide if you are nervous.
