Trans Am tour in the fall

Ok, I missed my trans Am tour that was supposed to start in April (had to have sugery, got out of shape, and missed too many work days in the hospital).

Anyway, I had settled on doing the tour next year and had given up on doing it this year. But as it turns out the company I am working for is being sold. So, I am now out of a job! Kinda sucks, but this gives me the opportunity to take 2-3 months off before I start my new job.

Question is: Would a trans Am tourn that starts in the beginning of August and ends sometime in October be too difficult? Going East to West it would seem that it might be way too hot in August and by the time I got to the western states it would be way too cold.

Any advice?

I guess I could go West to East but Ive heard that you really want to save the rockies, yellowstone, and the pacific for the end.

I think "too cold" is quite relative to the person. Do you sleep warm or cold?

When I lived out in Colorado it wasn't unusual to get snow in the higher areas before October. Your timetable puts you in West Yellowstone near the end of September. That is cutting it close.
As for which direction to go, both times I rode
the Transam I went west to east. Personally I liked beginning on the West coast , climbing the long grades and seeing the sights out there while I was still fresh. The Appalachian Mts on the east coast are steeper climbs on often narrow roads but they are all fairly short climbs.
Besides avoiding the weather issues you will be hitting the east coast mountains near peak fall foilage colors if you ride west to east

A Trans-Am tour starting on August 1 can be one of the best possible.
But you really should do it west to east.

I would suggest starting in the San Juans and heading over to Glacier before heading down the Rockies thru Yellowstone and, maybe, into Colorado. You can always shoot out into the Plains if bad weather threatens. Then do the Katy Trail across Missouri and continue southeast to the Carolinas. You could do the TransAm to Virginia, but the weather will be better further south. Maybe end on the outer Banks or even as far south as Savannah.

It can be a great trip.

Something like this
I'm doing west-east northern tier. The mountains in Washington are really tough, but they're done quickly. I'm pretty shocked that in less than a month after riding I'll be over the last pass (marias near glacer) til the east coast. What I'd do is follow the northern tier and then drop down to the trans-am when weather required it.
Also, cut bank, MT to the Mississippi is basically tilting downward which should speed things up there.

Hey sccr2337,

Are you doing the Trans Am? I'm headed West to East starting in August. Perhaps I'll see you on the road?

If you ride through Chester Illinois on the Trans Am and see a Wonder Bread truck, give me a wave!
Best thing about my route is seeing the tourbikes and their setups.

The Chester bridge crossing the Mississippi sucks for bikes, who thought of this crazy plan ?

See you on the road?

Starting Transamerica/western express on Aug 1 east to west. Hoping the plains cool down before we get there.
