Switching tyre types mid-tour...

Can it be done? Our bikes came with Vredestein Spiders but we really wanted the Marathon XRs. Can you run a bike on one of each (ie could we buy Marathons for spares and replace one, if a tyre wears out) or do you have to have the same type on front and rear?

Sorry if this is an immensely silly question

It is, as long as they fit the wheel and hold air you'll be good to go. I'd recommend using the same sizes though.
