Repair for chipped paint on steel frame?
I have a steel touring frame and the paint on the fork has started to chip off slightly where the lower headset bearing race was pressed on. This area isn't visible with the fork installed.
I was thinking of using clear nail polish to prevent corrosion, but wondered if there was a better option. Since you can't see the area I would prefer a solution that was really durable vs. one that was nice to look at.
I am a steel frame newbie so I'd appreciate any suggestions...
Nice or durable nail polish would be the same whether it's clear or colored to match your paint. You can also use Testors model paint if you want to match the color with something that is more durable then nail polish...or so they say.
even with a small chip, be sure to clean the area with white gas or similar solvent, and use some emery cloth so he area is bare metal. then use a rust inhibiting primer before painting (or nail polishing). paint doesn't adhere to bare metal very well. unfortunately, although paint is dry to the touch in a very short time, it takes ages to cure unless it's baked; so be careful when replacing.
