3300 miles Sioux Falls SD to Anchorage AK in 46 days

3300 miles Sioux Falls SD to Anchorage AK in 46 days
The subject tour was by 3 middle aged gent's, the summer of '06.
Did a 46 day unsupported tour with two brothers (70, 67 and myself at 61) from South Dakota to Alaska. Left about mid May and 46 days and 3300 miles later we arrived in Anchorage; still speaking and healthy. Then spent the summer fishing!
Bikes: One new Konga Miyata Randoneur (for the old guy); one new Rivendell Atlantis (mid brother) and one used mid 80's $40 Miyata Path Runner with bio pace gearing (for the young guy). All with front and rear panniers.
Biking Experience: Some (Randoneur); Quite a bit (Rivendell) and virtually none (Miyata).
Gear: Took camping gear and each had his own tent, bag, mattress although we only camped about 6 times when caught out between towns.
Mechanical Problems: Randoneur (none); Rivendell (2 flats); Miyata (2 flats).
Food: Ate lots, often, large quantities etc and still we all lost weight; at least 10 pounds each.
Best Part: Spectacular scenery; lots of wild life; bears one night when we camped and still there in the morning.. Mossies not bad.
Worst Part: Sore butts the entire way.
Anyone can do it; just get on and turn the cranks; afterwards it felt great!

Sounds great! ..and I agree with you that anyone can do it....
Hope the fishing was good! Did you take the same route back or did you make a loop or so?

Wow that sounds like a great trip. Its awesome that at your age(s) you are still having adventures that would intimidate most young people, too!
