    Internal gear hubs - not Rohloff

    Nothing against Rohloff except the price and spoking, so I have been following developments with other makers. SRAM is bringing out a 9 speed pretty soon. Does seem as though the altenatives are maturing. Still doesn't and probably never will allow customized ranges so you can't jump from you 32 sproket to a 26, and then have things more tightly geared in your spinning range, then throw in a few downhill gears. You end up with even spacing throughout the range (ideal with enough gears), but not enough stops on the way. Still lots to like

    I had a Shimano SG-8R20 eight-speed (free-wheel version, no brake) on my winter bike. It worked well enough for a few months, but after about 3,900 km/2,400 miles it developed nasty noises and mechanical losses, and almost stopped being a free-wheeling hub. According to Shimano, the service interval should be 5,000 km or one year. I suspect that there is a very good reason for the premium price on the Rohloff.

    Could be true though their performance record was not perfect in the ealy years either. The Rohloff is a premium product and a better product, no question, but it's economic model is based on very small scale production until recently in his garage(?), for what one gets it's an awesome product. A 5 speed motorcycle transmission made in asia can cost that much. But it isn't really my point, at 6 times the price the real market is pretty much limited to people looking for something new after they are bored with their Phil hubs, and some people who really and truly can't use any other form of trans. At 130 bucks, for the redline Nexus and new products each year, shimano and SRAM are here to stay. I would not mount your hub on a touring bike, but the redline is probably a different story.     Anyone know what the gear ratios are on the Shimano red ?
    Also curious about when the Sram internal hubs will be available.
    I'm very interested in any info regarding alternatives to the conventional 27 speed setup including Sturmey Archer.
