In an earlier thread, I asked about riding from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe. I recently did this ride, except I went to Carson City instead of climbing over Luther Pass and going to Lake Tahoe.

In all, it took me 9 days to get to Carson City and back to San Francisco, which included one rest day in Carson City. For the most part, I followed the ACA's Western Express map 1. I had a very difficult day of climbing that ended with my sleeping on a stone floor. Much of the scenery is fantastic and I took lots of pictures. Standing in Carson Pass (elevation 8574) is one of those thrills that defines the allure of bike touring.

What did you have in your panniers? I'm am not trying to be rude, but I just got back from a 7 day trip camping and cooking every night and I had 2 panniers plus my tent and pad on top of the rack. 4 full panniers seems like alot to me.

The four panniers weren't full.

I took three pairs of shorts and jerseys, 4 pairs of sox, 1 pair of pants, 2 t-shirts, 1 pair of walking shoes, 1 pound each peanuts and raisins, wind jacket, 2 pairs of biking gloves, energy bars, gatorade powder, a
toiletries kit.

I like having extra room and I have four panniers so why not use all of them? I think it better balances the bike. I have found that going uphill with a lot of weight on the back is more difficult that with a balanced load.

I figure it was 15 to 20 pounds.

I'm familiar with the route except mostly along 80...great photos...and way to go, 3 cheers to you!
