Have frame, but no fork, no headset - can I choose size?

    Hi again,

I have a frame, but no fork, headset or stem yet. The frame is a Giant OCR 2003, it originally came with a 1" threadless fork. I know headsets size have to match fork size, threadless to threadless, threaded to threaded, etc. I have a bit of a stupid question.

If I don't have a fork or headset, can I choose to get 1-1/8" or 1" (can I choose between getting a 1 1/8" headset and fork OR a 1" headset and fork)? Or must I get a 1" fork since that is the size that would have originally come with the bike and the only size that will fit through the front tube?

Put another way, when a 1" fork is fitted, is there additional space which would allow a larger diameter fork (but the headset holds in place)?

    Thanks for the help

NO! The size of the fork steerer is set by the diameter of the head tube.

You can switch out your current threaded for a threadless, but as mensioned you can't change the size, except downward. There are headsets designed to make a 1" fit in a 1.125". In your case you need a good touring fork in 1".

What happened to the one a guy wanted to sell?
