Canal du Midi Tour

I'm thinking of touring with SWMBO along the Canal du Midi in the south of France in 2008. Are their any forum members with experience touring the canal? We'll be credit card touring, so we will be looking for inexpensive accomodation along the canal. Is that possible?

A really nice area to cycle through, my wife and I cycled some of it this spring.
It was nice to see the series of locks and the canal going over the Orb river near Beziers.
It was spring and already many tourists so high season it might get too crowded on the cycling path.
As for places to stay I'm sure you wont need to wory much, but in high season it will be more expensive.
We stayed here www.mediterranee-plage.com for several days 15 euro a day with tent no electricity.
Not cheap.

I live about 50 miles away from the Midi canal. My preference is finding b and b's. There are several web sites used to locate b and b's. Gites are everywhere and off summer is usually around 45 euros for two. includes breakfast. You will have to travel a few miles off the canal to find the gite's. Just google for gite finder , ROussillon. During the summer you will have to reserve in advance because accommodations are booked months in advance.

I haven't toured along the Canal du Midi, but I have toured extensively near it in SW France. My touring in the region has usually been in either June or September, and I've never had any problem finding a room in those months. For several reasons (crowds, hot weather, flight cost), I suggest you try and go in those months instead of July or August. It's pretty easy to find inexpensive two star hotels throughout France, in addition to chambres d'hote (B&B) and the more primitive and cheaper gites.
