Where to measure on frame to determine max width of usable tire?
I'd like to get a really cheapo bike to use for the winter, but I'd like to be able to put some decent tires on it. If I'm looking at a used bike, where on the bike/frame/fork should I measure to determine the maximum sized tire that can work on it (clearance)?
I should be fairly obvious if the wheels are in place, lager tires are pretty close to being the actual dimention larger than their smaller tire. So a 32 Will be 3 smaller on the sides, and 6 smaller in height than the 38 you might replace it with. At least that is close enough for eyeballing. If there isn't any wheel in place the 37mm tire will be about 13.8 inched out from the axle with it's maximum width about 15 mm back from that.
