Tour de Cheese
Next year I am setting my sights on doing a tour around Wisconsin. I am planning on 8 or 9 days, starting and ending at home in River Falls. I would like to make it to Door County and back and stay in state and county parks and forests. Wisconsin has so much to see, I just might have to stretch into a two week tour. Anyone else spent a week or two touring Wisconsin?

We have an annual tour around WI. Next year will be the 17th. We start from the far western Chicago burbs and take a different route every year. I absolutely love this 9 days even though the rest of my family is only luke warm about it. There are ~12 families and we stay in hotels. Some in the group are former cheese-heads, some return to the area just for this trip. Days range from 60 to 100+ miles.

I road down the Mississippi from MSP to Madison to Rockford, IL as part of my cross-country last summer.
The one of the best parts of the ride was from Winona, MN to Madison, WI via the rail trail and some back roads. If you're biking in WI, you acnnot miss it. its not fast, its crushed limestone, but its very cool.

WI is the best state to ride in, period. It has the most respect for cyclists. Being home to two of the largest (if not the largest) bike manufacturers in the world doesn't hurt.

Wisconsin's rail-trail network was the major reason I decided to tour there in 2005. I rode from La Crosse to Milwaukee, mostly on rail-trails which were great but a little lonely in mid-September. The stretch between Reedsburg and Madison (about 70 mi. IIRC), was on-road and quite frankly, the best part of the trip. Being from Florida (where cyclists are seemingly just above armadilloes on the highway food chain), I found Wisconsin motorists to be courteous and in some cases literally encouraging.

The Mountain-Bay trail might be a nice option on the way over there, although it is crushed limestone. I've done a portion between Shawano and Wausau and it was quite nice.
