Matching silver 36 & 40 hole rims?
 

I'm going to liberate a pair of nice old Phil hubs (36 front, 40 rear) from their 27 inch rims to build up 700s. Although I realize that matching rims shouldn't matter I'm sort of vain (at least about this particular bike) and figure that since I'm building them both up at the same time...why not?

So I'm searching for a sturdy pair of silver rims (36/40) of the same make. I weigh under 150lbs and won't be using this bike for loaded touring. I realize a 40 hole hub might be more than I need but I couldn't pass up this deal and I may add a rear rack for commuting (plus some of the roads here in SF are in poor shape). Here's what I've found (and if you know of others please let me know!):

Mavic A719:
I'm very interested in these but can only find the 40 hole in black. Can anyone name a source that stocks 40 hole silver in this rim? (Harris Cyclery lists it but when I add to cart it's actually a black rim.)

Velocity Dyad:
Looks sturdy but the V profile isn't as old school as I'd like (although I hear it's stronger than a box rim). Any opinions?

Sun CR18 ABT:
These are described as "polished" and look black in the tiny catalogue photo. These are cheaper than the other two...are they good quality?

Sorry, I didn't mention this before but don't want to be accused of posting to the wrong forum. If it's not obvious I chose "Touring" because I thought you folks would have the most experience with 40 hole rims.

Peter White list all kinds of rims for 40 hole hubs. Mavic A719 are good. Lots of people have good things to say about the Sun rims as they do about the Velocity.

You might want to consider Alex rims, too. I just built up a set of wheels using 32/36 h Alex Adventurer rims. They were really inexpensive but seemed to be as well built and true as my A719s. The reviews I have read on them are excellent, too.

I am having good results with my Alex also, but I don't know if they are available in 40. (edit, I checked and they only come in 32 and 36 for the DH22)

I have seen the CR 18s in silver, so they are out their I think. Sometime not everyting gets in the catalog, you have to actually ask the shop if they can order them.

Will this be a freewheel hub, just out of curiosity?

Yes, the rear hub (120mm) takes a 5 speed freewheel. I have a single sided Campag downtube shifter and matching Campag single sided bb cable guide so when it's all put together it will be my 5 speed city bike. It's my dad's old PX-10 so it will be redubbed the PX-5.

While the Alex rims don't have the right hole count for this project they look like just the ticket for my Rockcombo mountain tourer. The price is right! Thanks for that recommendation.

Do touring rims with the separate "box" (or internal chamber) for the spokes mean that no rim tape is necessary?

the "double wall" makes the rim much stronger. these days most all rims are double wall. only the cheapest rims are single wall (no box).

you have to use rim tape on these as well. the spoke access hole is punched out and usually has a sharp edge that will give you a flat eventually (if not immediately upon inflation).

Or you can use Veloplugs instead of rim tape. They're made by Velocity and are widely available. I haven't used them, but I've heard good reviews.

No, because while the heads are recessed in the box, the edges of the holes would still stretch out the inertube. For the small amount of extra weight, I would recomend using some light weight rim tape, I just use fiberglass filement tape, it's also a good material for reparing holes or small tears in tire casings.

I am running 4 sets of 40 hole hubs - 2 SETS VELOCITY DEEP VEES, ONE SET OF VELOCITY FUSIONS, AND A SET MAVIC T217 Anodized grays - all have been pretty good. Lots of other out there including FIR, Velocity Dyads - been hearing good this about the Da Vinci 22's

I helped out a friend with a very simular project a while back--- she needed a couple of 36 hole 27" rims for a commuter bike (700c rims didn't match up with the brakes :( )

She chose the Sun CR-18 rims because they came in the right size and spoke count, didn't cost too much and have a good track record. Go to the LBS and order CR-18s right for your project and be done with it. If your local shop can't help you out, try Harris Cyclery on the internet.

CR 18 sounds like the ticket this time. because of the Silver thing. I think the velocity is a better rim, but I don't know if it comes in other than black. Also, I like a silver rim in a narrow section like the MA2s I am building right now (no longer made), CR18, or 719. When it gets to a really deep rim, I think black looks better. Just my own preference.

I run the CR18's with good results! I got mine at Lickton's (www.lickbike.com) quite reasonable on price. They're good on spoke pricing too!
