Been around for a while, good quality gear, seemed to emerge with the MTB craze in '80s and their solid value Rockhopper models, since developed into major force.

I"m into loaded touring, on road or trail, I also do MTB toruing. For the road I prefer LHT, Nashbar, Kogswell porteur (stupid wheel size), or Urbanite touring.

They are one of the better vintage models from the golden years of touring bikes (early to mid 80's) with good touring geometry and all the nice to have braze ons and plenty of room for panniers, wide tires, and fenders. I built an '83 model up about 13 years ago and it's been great for me. I often find myself preferring to ride it over a more sport or racing style bike for non-touring rides.

If you can one from that era at a good price I would jump on it. Be careful not to get the present version that Specialized has named Expedition because it is a lower end comfort bike and far different from the original.

If you get it and want some ideas for the build, send me a PM and I'd be glad to tell you how mine is equipped.
Good Luck
