The big Island

I am going to spend three weeks on the big island of Hawaii in januray 2007. Do not know yet if i shall bring my own road or mtb-bike or rent. Has anyone toured there, what to see, any links to good websites ?

I don't recall the hills being that steep, but I didn't attempt to ride up Mauna Kea! The ride from Hilo up to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park goes from sea level to 4,000 ft, but is amazingly gentle. The ride north from Hilo along the coast was up and down. We headed west on an old road over from Honokala toward the Kona coast. The old road (nice and quiet, and very pretty) merged into the main road about 2/3 of the way to the top. There was definitely a climb involved, but I didn't find it that hard. Not sure about the altitude of the pass, maybe about 3,000 ft or a bit lower. We only biked south as far as the Kona airport. The southern part of the island does look quite hilly on my map, I have to admit. Personally, I liked the wet side a lot more than the dry side of the Big Island, and for the other Hawaiian islands, as well.

Seriously, though - check out this site:

This listing covers all the islands. The 3 in Hilo are on the big island for sure.

Also, as I am in Oahu, I can tell you to be prepared to get wet in January.
That's the end of our winter rainy season and the start of our spring rainy season.

This year we had almost 2 months straight of pouring rain in Feb/Mar.

I'm planning a tour of the big island by bike, but am looking at doing it after the rains.
Maybe April/May. It's still cool, not quite tourist season, everything is green... etc.
