best Rack for Touring and Commuting...?
 

Hi,
I just purchased a new Jamis Aurora. What rear rack is best for touring/commuting? It would primarily be used for commuting but also for occasional future tours.

I've always liked Tubus racks, with a 4D Toplight taillight mounted to it

+1 on the Tubus. They are the best rack I've ever used, and I've tried many brands over the years.

Tubus racks are excellent racks, but they can be a bit hard on the wallet. My cost effective solution is the Blackburn racks. I have a couple on a mountain bike that have been in constant use since the early 90's and they are still going strong! Not as pretty as the Tubus but well built and an excellent value for the money. You can probably find a knock off copy of the Blackburn but who knows how well it will last. I just wish Blackburn still made the front Mountain Rack :(

Tubus Cargo: very good, very expensive, very adjustable, purty;)

Delta Univeral Megarack: cheap, still pretty good, not ugly but plain.

There are lots of others around including the Blackburn. Just about any of them will get the job done.

Tubus are great. I have a Surly Nice Rack.

I'd also consider an Old Man Mountain rack - great quality & service - plus they are made in the USA if that matters to you.

It is pricey, but I have been very pleased with the strength of the Bruce Gordon rack I put on my Jamis Aurora in May '06....

I commute 25 mi. R/T each day, and did 1 440 mi. credit card tour with it.

I use the Trek Interchange rack/panniers -- extremely easy to clip on/off.

Nitto steel racks are beautifully made, sturdy, and you can mount a taillight.

I'm rarely able/willing to splurge, but I did so for my touring accessories, including the Tubus rear rack from Wayne at thetouringstore.com. I plan to do lots of weekend and mini-tours and will put heavy loads on it for family camping rides near home; I feel like the extra strength will be needed. Also, that 4D tail-light is great. Excellent visibility and it's bolted securely to the rack.

I finally splurged for a tubus cargo from Wayne at the touring store. Now I see what all the fuss was about. It is rock solid.

I have a tubus cargo on the back and a surly nice on the front. The best of both worlds. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions. Most are out of my price range, though. Definitely looking ot spend < $100. I'll probably just settle on one of the Topeak racks. My shop where i bought my bike sells Jandd but they can also get pretty expensive.

Same here, :beer: but Surly Nice on the back and a Tubus Nova on the front.

My son has a Surly, and I have a Nitto. Both are well made and either would be a good choice. I'd give the Nitto the edge for looks, and the Surly for load capacity.

As you can see I have replied to myself. The reason is I posted the link to AEBIKE for a Surly Nice Rack on February 1st and the price was $90. I check the link today (February 6th) and the price is now a whopping $136.00 :eek: . I hope someone was able to get the deal post earlier. :rolleyes:
