Spring Training....

We are heading to Italy in May, but would like to start doing some serious training in March. We are looking for location that is within reasonable driving distance and would give us a minimal assurance of decent riding weather. We are simply not into bundling up so much that we cannot spin the pedles for fun. We live in Annapolis Maryland. Any suggestions? Thanks to all

Get a trainer ... or two.

Mine is very similar to this one:

But there are lots of options:

With a trainer you can ride in any weather conditions at all, and you can start now ... you don't have to wait till March! Plus it would likely be less expensive than driving somewhere every weekend, and/or several times a week to ride.

BTW - how cold can Maryland be in March? March is the month I usually start riding outside regularly up here in Canada because the weather is nice enough for it.

The eastern shore of Maryland and Va is rideable most of the year. Just an hour or so drive from Annapolis.
Locally you have a bike path that goes toward BWA, as long as it isn't icy, dress warm and ride. You can also walk 5 miles or more at a brisk pace That gives you just as much of a cardiovascular workout as 2 hours of riding.

By mid March avg temps should be well into the 50's that still gives you 6 weeks to prepare

Another area within 3 hours of you that I like to ride in the winter is southern eastern Virginia between Petersburg and Suffolk, lots of great rural riding. You can base yourself in a motel in Williamsburg , ride to the Jamestown/Scotland ferry, cross over and ride either towards Smithfield, Claremont or towards Franklin. You could also make it an overnighter to Franklin.( there is a Days Inn and Super 8) Very little traffic in that area except for US 460 and US 58. I am probably going there myself the week of February 19th

Just go out and ride! Maryland in March is usually not bad for riding weather wise. Average highs are about 55. That doesn't require much bundling up. It isn't that hard to ride year round here, just ride a trainer on the coldest days if you need to.
