Fork for touring
I have a Trek Hybrid that I want to modify to make it more useable for light duty touring. It currently has a suspension fork on a 1 1/8" threaded steerer, V brakes and 700x38 tires. I want to remove the heavy suspension fork and install a solid fork that accomodates fenders and a lowrider rack plus allows me to keep the V brakes and 700x38 tire size. I would also like to switch to a threadless headset if possible.
What should I be looking for?

Surly Long Haul Trucker fork may work:

It comes in sizes for 26" and 700c wheels. Only problem is whether your frame was designed for extra slope caused by some suspension forks; adding the Surly fork may lower the front of the bike somewhat.

My LBS ordered a suspension-corrected TANGE MTB fork. 1 & 1/8 threadless. $55 or so. Will build up an aluminum ebay frame for my winter commuter- based on a Wavecrest electric bike frame, minus the electrics.

suspension corrected, rigid 29'er fork would do the trick. i don't know of one off the top of my head though. maybe the Surly karate monkey fork? isn't that a 29'er?

That's a good idea. I don't see why a KM would have a suspension corrected fork myself, but it's worth a check. Also even without and explicit intention to correct for suspension there is a wide range of heights offered. Go to a website like Spicer and search all through the forks section. To hear the guys on the Frameforum talk, 29er forks aren't all that comon and a lot of guys are bulding some rather frankestinian alternatives out of straight tube. Unfortunately even those aren't cheap. I think you may have to stick with the forks, maybe you could install limiters so they don't pump om you ansd just deal with the weight.

I can lock out the suspension on my current front fork but it is extra weight plus it has no proper way to install a low rider front rack.
