BOB trailer tire
 

I just purchased a new BOB Yak Plus trailer from REI using the 20% off and my dividend. I remember there being a discussion about the original tire on the BOB trailer being not very good. Can anyone tell me if this is still the case or have they changed the original tires to decent ones. The tire that came with my BOB Yak is a Cheng Shin 16 X 1.75.

CS make good, affordable tires. All the performance.com branded tires are CS. They probably go 90% the distance of name brand tires at 25-50% of the price.

The bob rear tire is only gonna have 30-40 lbs load on it tops, for most riders. Thats less load than the typical front tire, which usually lasts twice as long as the rear. So it should last a long time.

The bob tire has a semi-knobby tread with a not-so-high pressure rating, so maybe a slicker high P rated tire might save a miniscule amount of energy.

Higher tire pressure equals a bouncy and less controllable trailer. Just run even a tire rated for higher pressure at least near the max recommended pressure for the trailer. It isn't quite as critical for a BOB, being a single wheel, but is more critical on a 2 wheeled trailer, where bounciness reduces stability!

After suffering from a shreaded CS tire on my BOB, I would definitely invest in a Schwalbe Marathon before taking any trip to the hinterlands. The relative prices of tires as stated above is correct, but you'll get 3X the wear out of a Marathon. You get what you pay for.

I don't know what type of tire the BOB comes with these days, the one that came with mine was a knobby tire that required a jackhammer to remove. I replaced it with a schwable, which was "OK" barely "OK". After it self destructed I got a Maxxis Hookworm which has been one tough little tire, it's 1.95" and 110psi Max. This is my recommendation. Also if your bike has presta valves, this is a good time to switch to presta on the BOB so that you have the same valve on both. You will just need the tube adapter, a little ring of aluminum for the thinner valve stem. Here is a good source for trailer tires and other BOB accessories, good prices too.

I've used my BOB on many trips and all I've put in the tire was Slime and air. It has held up great. I make it a point not to over load the trailer maybe thats why it's lasted so long.

Oh my ... I got my BOB October 2005 I think it was. The Chen Shin tire that came on it was garbage. It wasn't even close to being round. I tried dismounting and remounting a couple of times thinking that maybe the tire didn't seat well, but it was truly out-of-roundness. I got the suspension BOB, and you could watch the trailer oscillate with the out-of-roundness. Total junk.

I too got a Maxxis Hookworm. So far it's worked very well and I've been happy with it.
