GPS Watch

I just purchased a Timex Speed & Distance watch to use while cycling. Anyone else use one? If so, do you like better than a regular bike computer? This model has speed and distance, current, avg and max speed and current, avg and max pace. I do not know exactly what pace is, anyone? Thanks, Dan

NO experience or reports about the Timex unit, I'd be interested to see what you think of it after a few rides.

I've heard of people using the Garmin Foretrex which is a GPS unit worn as a watch. I played around with it at a outdoor shop but didn't buy it. I didn't really care for it for what I use a GPS for. Plus my arm was itchy while wearing it.

The reason I prefer a handheld GPS unit like a Etrex-Cx is you can actually see the map of the area you are riding in plus it will show up to 8 data fields at one time on the trip computer screen. I like downloading the tracks of my ride on looking at them on the computer.

Someone correct me if I am wrong. I think pace is based on distance/time... like you can set the pace for 1 km every 3 minutes and the unit will tell you (beep) if you below or above that pace. This is probably important if you are training for bicycle races or conditioning yourself for speed.

Let us know how the Timex unit works for you.

I compared it to my Shimano Flight Deck on my ride today. The miles showed .04 more on the Timex vs the Flight Deck. The avg is different since the FD stops when I do and the Timex stops only when I pause or turn of the GPS monitor, so it is less. I like it! Do not have to program different wheel sizes so I can use it on any of the bikes or when I hike or run. Battery life is stated as 12 hours for the single AA in the GPS and the watch battery should be a year or so, same as a heart monitor watch.

That's good news, glad you like the unit. Does the Timex unit save a track of your ride that you can upload into a computer to view it on a maps?
