camping in a hammock tent?

i am looking to do some cyclo-camping and it looks like hammocks could be a good way to go since i'll be alone and won't need a large tent. anyone else use a hammock or hammock style tents? do you have trouble finding places to "pitch" them and are they comfortable to sleep in? i like the idea of being up off the cold hard ground and away from rocks and puddles.

I love my Hennessy Hammock. You can camp anywhere without worrying about what the ground is like or how wet it is. Check out my stealth camping journal.

The Hennessy is asymmetrical so you sleep across slighly keeping your body flat. It's more comfortable that a mattress. The only down side is that many campgrounds either don't have trees or won't let you attach to trees.

i looked at those @ REI.com. some of them appear to have a 200lb. weight limit. i'm about 255, hopefully dropping some weight with the cycling but do you think it would support me, i know lawyers, not engineers usually set those weight limits.

EDIT: @ their site they have a chart showing what hammocks are for big/tall guys. sorry.

Go to the Henessy Hammock website. They have models that allow for more weight

It's the only way to go!

I have never used a hammock style tent, but have been in a lot of places where you would be hard pressed to find any verticle structure to attach one to.

In the years I've been hammock camping, I have never once been unable to find a suitable spot.

I'm thinking when i come nto a little money (probably about May) i want to buy a Hennesey Hammock Explorer Deluxe Asym. its a little heavier than some but it seems like everyone who has one likes it. Thanks for the reviews. almost anywhere that i'd camp would have trees or worst case, you can use the hammock on the ground.

If you do camp on the ground, you might like to carry one short tent pole and some line and pegs. Unless, of course you enjoy the feeling of your tent being on your head.

There are some good reviews, both pro and con here.

I have been thinking about doing this as well...I picked up a sleeping bag already...looking for a tent...just a single person one...is the Hammock like being in a coocoon or can you read in it or write in a journal? I have never seen one in person....

I read and write in mine all the time. But it's so comfy, I usually fall asleep after ten minutes of reading.

I fell into the Hennessy when I was looking for a small bivo tent. They are really claustrophobic. As stated earlier there is lots of room to read. I have a small LED light on the main cord. The Hennessy comes with a little bag that you can place some personal items in and you can slide it where you want it.

The big problem is remaining awake. It is just so comfortable!
