Germany Question (Becnal?)
My friend and I are soon off to the Black Forest, and have been looking at accomadation in the Bett und Bike guide.
What's the deal with "ruhetag"?
Am I right in thinking that it's a day when the restaurant or cooking facilities in the gasthaus will be closed and not the gasthaus itself?
Also, we notice the day changes from gasthaus to gasthaus, so one might be Wednesday, the other Monday. Will that be a ruhetag for the town, or just the gashaus? By that I mean, if we roll into town on a ruhetag, will everything be closed, or just the cooking facilities in the gasthaus?

Two really good questions. Ruhetag, by the way, is the most infamous word in German.
1. If you arrive at a Gasthaus on a Ruhetag, I don't know if you would be able to find someone to register you in. So, it's probably a good bet that yes, the whole Gasthaus is closed on Ruhetags. If you arrive the night before a Ruhetag, then you will still be able to stay over-night.
2. Ruhetags apply just to individual operations. If one place is closed on Mondays (the most common Ruhetag), then the place across the street may still very well be open. It isn't a town-wide decison.
When are you going, and what will your route be?

We go in a week's time. We get to Stuttgart at about 11PM Friday night, then next day we have a 30 miler to somewhere around Horb am Necker. Next day we head for Villinger, then the day after, if we're lucky Freiburg (though we may take a detour to Furtwangen, and then back to titisee. We'll stay a couple of nights in Freiburg, then get the train to Offenburg and ride the B500 to Baden Baden, the road is supposed to be beautiful.
Then after a couple of nights there, we head over the hills to Calw for a night, and then back to Stuttgart.
I'm really looking forward to it. But the main problem is there's just too much suff to see in the 9 dayswe'll be there; I'd love to go to Waldshut and Bad Sackingen, where you can walk across a covered bridge to Switzerland. Maybe that will have to be for next year...no. hold on, I've got a 250 mile trip in Northern Spain pencilled in for then.
