Loadout for my first ever tour...

I'm just about ready to do my first tour. It'll be self supported and close to home (I'm on an island... can only get so far away).

My current list of stuff is below. I've done a test packing to make sure everything fits. I still have room for food (though I don't have that figured out yet - other than oatmeal, it seems a lot of experienced tourers eat a lot of oatmeal). I'm using two Arkel T28's and two Arkel T42's and a generic trunk bag.

Let me know what you think! Some items I know aren't on there yet are: bike oil, rain gear, extra spokes, and food.

Camping:
o Hennessey Hammock Deluxe Explorer
o SlumberJack Meridian Sleeping Bag
o REI Lite Core 1.5 Sleeping Pad

Cooking:
o Open Country 5pc Nonstick Set
o Stainless Compact Utensil Set
o Folding Sterno Windscreen / Potstand
o Homemade Pepsi Can Stove (still working on)
o Small 8oz Bottle for Alcohol Fuel
o Lighter
o Salt and Pepper in Small Coleman Container
o Small Hook-Knife style Can Opener
o Small Stack of in-cup pour-over Coffee Filters

Clothing:
o 2 pair Bike Shorts
o 3 loose fit Jerseys
o 1 pair lightweight Khaki Camping Slacks
o 1 lightweight no-wrinkle Camping Shirt
o Shower Sandals / Flip-Flops
o Kingston Forte Biking Shoes
o 3 pair lightweight Socks
o 2 sets of bicycling Gloves

Hygiene:
o Sea to Summit 10L Kitchen Sink
o MSR Large Micro Fiber Towel
o MSR Small Micro Fiber Washcloth
o Backpackers Toilet Paper (small rolls)
o 2oz No-Rinse Shampoo
o 2oz No-Rinse Body Bath
o 1.25oz Insect and Tick Repellant
o Fresh-n-Up Towlettes

Tools:
o Folding Leatherman Knife
o Small Dorcy AAA LED Flashlight
o Assortment of Zip Ties
o Large Elastic Strap
o Small Crescent Wrench
o Park Tools Spoke Wrench
o Short Length of old Tube
o Patch Kit
o Spare Tubes
o Multi-tool
o Pressure Gage
o Presta Pump
o Tire Levers

Electronics:
o Yaesu FT-60R 2M/70cm HAM Radio
o Dell Axim X5 Pocket PC w/ Foldup Keyboard (maybe)
o Canon Digital Camera
o CygoNite 10W Halogen Headlight
o Various Cateye and other Taillights
o Cateye Astrale 8 wired Computer
o Various batteries for lights
o Chargers for headlight and radio (maybe)

... whew... I just hope the bike can handle all this and my 243 pound fat butt!

Sounds like a good list to me! What about a hat? And maybe a head torch?

Hi,

Here's my 2-cents:

* I would do without the Open Country 5pc Nonstick Set because it's overkill and you don't need the extra weight. Instead, I'd take only one titanium pot. They cost about $30 but well worth it. Super light, very strong.

* One of your three jerseys should be long-sleeved.

* One of your two pairs of cycling gloves should be the "winter" type. I used them even in late May when going through the mountains.

* You're bringing a Kitchen Sink?

* I'd like to suggest taking a bungee web, which holds everything quite securely on your rear rack. REI carries them.

* Regarding rain gear, Altrec.com sells water proof socks. Adventurecycling.org sells shoe covers. They're an unbeatable combination while riding during cold, rainy days.

Good luck on your tour!

titanium pot

I've been thinking about getting the titanium pot. From most other posts concerning cooking, it sounds like what most do. It also sounds like what is best suited for a pop-can stove. That is, the most cooking I'll be doing is boiling water. What I eat will likely be cooked in boiling water.

As for the gloves, even when it rains here it's a warm rain. Gotta love Hawaii.
I did think about a long sleeve jersey, but decided to go with sun screen (which I forgot to add to list).

Thanks for the info!

Back to my list, another item I have but forgot to add, is a Katydyn Water Filter/Purifier Bottle.

Oh, and a new question: Bike Oil - do you rebottle it somehow or use a small bottle and hope it doesn't leak? put it in a ziploc?

Great list of things. I'm glad you're going with a Hennessey, I feel more validated in packing mine along.

I love it! I tried it out for two nights while car camping and loved it. Of course, that's how I found out I needed something to insulate my back. The sleeping bag wasn't sufficient, even in Hawaii.
