about to start first tour, advice needed
hi,
i'm new to the forum and also new to touring! i used to be a keen mountain biker, but a couple of bike thefts and a long period of inactivity later i've decided to get back into riding.
this summer i plan to ride from Bordeaux to Marseille via Carcassonne and Montpellier. The total distance is somewhere in the region of 800km.
firstly i need to get a bike. can anyone reccomend an entry level bike fit for purpose? I'm currently a student so my budget is VERY tight! i have 200 coming through from the insurance company after my last bike was stolen, so bearing in mind that would probably not be enough for a heavy steed made of scaffolding poles and cellotape, how much do you think at can get away with spending?
i'm also not sure whether a road bike would be right - would it be better to get a more upright XC style bike with slicks on?
finallyi'd love some advice on how best to get the bike on a plane!
thanks

I know you told us to ignore this thread, but I'd check out https://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=262432 as well. It's still active and provides a great step by step process. The poster seems to be in a situation similar to yours.
