Exodus to the East

University has gotten a little dry and still have some loan dollars leftover, so I am thinking about embarking on little tour this summer to get my mojo back. I live in the middle of Illinois (Macomb) and am looking to get to Asheville, NC to drink a few beers and see some live music with a buddy of mine. Its about 700mi and from the looks of it, I have a few options on how to get there - either going through Kentucky nearly the whole way or staying north and cutting across Indiana and Ohio, then dropping south through Tennessee.

How do you choose the best route? Any good suggestions?

What gear is nice to have? and what is neccessary to have?
