So, when are you coming back so we can go for a ride?

Gotte 05-06-07 08:46 AM

Now that would be something, wouldn;t it? Fortunately, being self-employed, I would normally be able to get away pretty much when I wanted. Unfortunately, being married with kids, that doesn;t really happen.
Maybe one day...

Tom Stormcrowe 05-06-07 08:51 AM

Nice pics.....more please!:D

NeezyDeezy 05-06-07 01:58 PM

very nice

jcm 05-06-07 03:31 PM

It's like oxygen. More pics, quickly! I live vicariously through you people who can actually tour on bikes- especially in Europe... heavy sigh...

NeezyDeezy 05-06-07 05:30 PM

That's a big part of it. Due to that globalization thing, I lost a life-long job a while back, and have had to start over - at the bottom. So, with very little in the way of paid vacation, it's very frustrating to have relatives in Vienna begging me to come over, and not be able to. :( :( :(

You must be a professional photographer. You're photos are incredible!

Gotte 05-08-07 05:42 AM

Why, thanks you. I'm actually a painter - I have an agent who sells my paintings, and I can actually make a living out of it, which is not usual for my trade, but I have long dallied with photography and am in the process of setting up a wedding photography business. Done a few now, but have to get down to the hard work - website, etc. It's all in the process, but I find it heavy going. Too apt to start daydreaming and surfing when I should be working...

I should have some new Black Forest images for tonight.

Thanks for the pics. I now have my photo albums spread out all over the living room. My wife thinks I need therapy. I think I need a plane ticket.;)

eric von zipper 05-09-07 10:37 AM

Wonderful pictures, Gotte. What sort of camera set up did you use with the Black Forest photos? Did you do any image finishing?

Gotte 05-10-07 01:42 PM

JCM, I know that feeling. I'm just back and already getting itchy feet. God knows what I'll be like in a few months.

Eric, I took a Sony 828. It's big, but not as big as my number one camera, Canon 20D. It has a good range to the lens, and is generally okay. I could also use it one handed (useful when riding). I took a camcorder as well, both up in the handlebar bag, which I could also use one handed. I've not looked yet, but I should have some good stuff.
I strapped the camcorder to my handlebar bag for a long sequence riding down the ever so fast, ever so crowded bike path by the side of the Necker as it ran through the centre of Freiburg. Hairy stuff, shooting along with nothing but air between you and the river, and what felt like every cyclist in Freiburg behind and in front of you.
When I get it done, if it's good, I might put it up on YouTube (though I don;t usually look at video footage until months after - I like to let it season a while so it isn;t so fresh in my memory.

As for post processing, the 828 is good in that it only really needs a bit of sharpening, some levels and maybe a bit of colour adjustment. I do tend to work on them, though, burning, dodging, bluring and erasing here and there. I kind of like that slightly glowy, even blurred, old-world photography that's gone by the by with all this digital preocupation with sharpness, but that's another story...

Caspar_s 05-10-07 04:47 PM

Ahh, I thought there was something wrong with your camera or my monitor. Blink Blink, nope still looks blurry in some places and not in others :-)

ephemeralskin 05-11-07 02:36 PM

wow those vienna photos are great!

schwarzwald pics are a bit blurry, imo. the bridge one is really cool though. wheres that at, exactly? i totally gotta ride through there!

ephemeralskin 05-11-07 02:38 PM

oh and do you have a photo site? i wouldnt mind seeing more if you had them. the first three vienna shots are excellent.

Gotte 05-12-07 06:05 AM

I'm working on a site at the minute. You can visit my Flickr site though to see more stuff.

The bridge is at Bad Sackingen. A great little town on the Rhine in the south of Baden Wurtenburg. You cross the bridge into Switzerland (which around there is a little bland). The church is wonderful. Breathtaking interior. I'll put some pictures up of that when I get them done.
There's an even prettier town about 10 miles down the Rhine called Lorrach. The Swiss side is equally pretty. It hasn't got the covered bridge, though.

The best thing about all the German towns on the Rhine is that they weren;t bombed by the allies in the war (as so many of the towns and cities in Germany were). This means when you see a house that proclaims, say 1501, on the front, it almost certainly is from 1501, not reconstructed post 1945.

ANyway, glad you like the pics, even if the blurry, turn of the century look isn;t for you (which is fine, each to his own).

All the best

I'd really love it if you could fly back here tomorrow so that you could photograph my tour!

Gotte 05-12-07 10:23 AM

Believe me, I'd love it if I could fly back there and photograph your tour.

Alps and then Hamburg?

Ahhh, the Alps

Beautiful!

Some seriously good photography (here and on your flickr site). As a relatively
new dad, this pic really makes me reflect upon my life and responsbilities:

Thanks for that. Yes, that wreath was still there last time I passed, a couple of years on from the accident. It was, predictably, a cyclist killed by a car. My wife was actually driving past when the poor chap was being put into the ambulance.
Take care, my friend. Watch out. Keep safe.
