I'm leaving tomorrow for 2 weeks
I'm heading through the catskills and adirondacks. Any advice or recommended stops? The catskill part is still up in the air, so I'd love any input you can give.
I'll be on this sweet steed - Palomo, a 1983 (same year as me!) Miyata 610 – basically stock… except with a NOS 13-32 5spd freewheel, inline levers (I regret putting these on, now I can't use my handlebar bag), suntour barcon ratchet shifters (love these!) and with panacela 1 ¼” touring tires. He is named after Bolivar's steed. http://img02.picoodle.com/img/img02/...sm_45549aa.jpg Yeah, I know, black fly season... so I'll be taking a 100% deet mini two ounce spray bottle 25 year old Canndondale rear panniers (for stuff that can get wet) 1st gen Ortlieb front rollers (for stuff that can't get wet) one 24 ounce nalgene OTG bottle, one regular 26 oz bottle, and I might add another one this evening Big Agnes Seedhouse SL2 + footprint Big Agnes Yampa bag long (+40) Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleep Pad long I don't have a compression sack for these... it's embarrassing but I've got them in the cloth sack that came with the bag and then I put that in a garbage bag for waterproofing. It's ghetto but it should work okay, if cumbersomely. Inflatable pillow - this thing sucks I might leave it home 2 short sleeve jerseys 1 long sleeve jersey 1 long sleeve smartwool shirt 1 short sleeve cotton t-shirt 2 bike shorts 1 bike tights 1 Regular lightweight shorts 2 pairs of underwear Camper's towel 2-3 bandanas 2 cycling socks, 2 pair regular socks, one pair smartwool socks Neoprene shoe covers 1 pair sneakers - I'm only taking these, nothing else as far as footwear goes (I've got toe clips) 1 pair gel cycling gloves Clothes line Gill adrenaline waterproof shell Stormpants (I hate these things, and with it being 80 degrees I'm leaving them home, I've decided) Helmet cover …helmet 4 oz camp suds toothbrush toothpaste floss Deodorant Sunscreen Aspirin earplugs Wallet + traveler’s checks book(s) Cell phone + 1 extra battery Polycarbonate spork Sponge Several quart size Zip lock bags 1 long cable and a krypto u lock Topeak road Morph G pump Topeak alien II (I think I have a little buyers remorse over this thing, but it will have to do) 2 Tubes Patchkit Matches Zip ties Planet bike blinkies Tikka plus headlamp no cooking, there's markets everywhere |
Jeepers! Look at that bike! how freaking tall are you?? ;)
Have a great trip! |
haha, I know... it's weird.
and take this into consideration - the standover height on that top tube is just shy of 35 inches! |
!!
|
The tour had to be cancelled, I apparently can't take the bike on amtrak, and ny trailways requires that I have a box or canvas sack to encase the bike in.
|
I see you got your stem on. NICE rig !
|
You cancelled a two week tour for that? Why don't you go down in the morning and get a bike box from a bike shop, or a bike bag? Start a day late if necessary. Leave from a closer point to your home. Such a sweet rig, you're packed up, and you have two weeks off! Sometimes being flexible and taking advantage of unforseen events can have serendipitous results.
|
Ya, make the most of the time -- adapt your route, get a box, whatever! You are all set to go!
|
You can also ask your LBS to ship the bike to the nearest bike shop at your starting point. It's worth the extra $ if it's the difference between taking the trip and sitting home.
|
My trip was postponed.
Instead, I went on a ride in the catskills for 3 1/2 days using the memorial day weekend. It was fantastic. I should have pictures soon. Thanks for the encouraging words - I was a bit defeatist but figured something out in the end. |
That's the spirit! :)
|
Looking forward to the pics.
