I'm thinking of getting some S&S couplings put on my bike, and I'm curious as to what size a suitcase will a typical bike (mine's a 52 cm) c/w wheelset fit into?

S&S sells a case made specifically for the job. It's 26x26x10, as shown here:

I believe it's important to use their case (or the properly sized one) since you want a fairly tight fit to keep things from bouncing around. They also include separators that use pvc tubes to keep the case from compressing. Finaly, you can get a net that holds it all together, and allows TSA to remove the bike as a unit without screwing up the packing.

How do these bikes ride compared to a normal bike? I guess the racks and bags have to travel seperately.

They ride pretty much exactly like a normal bike. The couplers add about one pound to the weight of the bike, but that's about the only difference. One of my previous touring bikes was a Trek 520 retrofitted with S&S couplers, and it felt exactly the same before and after the couplers.

The standard 26x26x10 bag doesn't have space for much besides the bike itself. Depending on the size of your bike and your packing skills, you might be able to squeeze a rack or two in there. But fenders, panniers, helmets, etc. will have to be packed seperately.
