Schwalbe Marathon on Velocity Dyad rims

I was trying to put some Schwalbe Marathon tires (700 x 32) on a set of wheels that I built up -- Velocity Dyad rims, Phil Wood hubs. I noticed that the tire seemed to be quite bigger than the rim; I had to push the tire in to keep the tube from creeping out from between the tire and the rim as I inflated.

Yesterday, I went out on a ride, and after about 4 miles, I had a blowout. When I was changing the tube, I again noticed that it seemed odd that the tire seemed to be so much bigger than the rim. I surmised that the blowout occured from the tube creeping between the tire and rim.

In any case, I took the bike to my lbs so they could investigate.

Has anyone else noticed this type of thing with Marathons on Dyad rims? Any ideas on what my problem could be?

I have no idea, but I'm glad I read this, since I was planning the exact same combination when I replace the tires on my townie, which has the Dyads on it... Interested to hear some opinions!!

I recently put Marathon Plus 700x25 on my Bontrager road wheels and had a similar problem. Marathon is notoriously difficult and it took me 30 minutes and finally had to recruit my wife to get the darn thing on. It initially appeared that the tire was too big for the rim which was why it was so hard to keep the bead in place.

I gave up on the rear tire because I got a pinch flat after another 30 minutes and I just brought it to my LBS and gave them $10 for the install. It took them only 10 min with their special equipment, but no more bruised palms for me!

On the plus side, these Marathons have been ROCK SOLID on the commuter and IMO better than the Armadillo it replaces. Both are pretty stiff, but I like the feel of the Marathons better.

That's a bummer about the blowouts. Which Marathon model are you using? Seems like there are a bunch of different syles now. I'm running the Marathon Slicks (700x30) on my Dyad Rims w/ XT hubs. They went on easy enough, without being too tight or loose. I've also used the Marathon Plus (700x25) on several different rims (Mavic Open Pro, Bontrager Mustang, Alex X2100) without any problems. Perhaps it was a bad batch of tires? Sorry I'm not much help...

I was using the standard Marathon tires. I got my bike back from the shop with a set of Specialized Borough CX tires -- same size, 700 x 32. They mounted on fine, without being too big. My LBS said that this must have been a bad batch, since they were surprised at how large the tires were (they tried mounting them on some of the shop rims and had the same bad luck).

FYI, I'll have to say that Schwalbe is a very good company. After I got my bike back, I called up Schwalbe North America and described the situation. Without any hesitation, the customer service guy told me that he'd send out 4 new tires (I had a total of 4 of these that had the same problem). I suppose it was just a freak bad batch. I'll be sending the "problem tires" back, so they can see what the problem was.

Using Schwalbe XR's 700x35 on Dyad rims with Phil Hubs. No problem on or off road. I wonder how different the Marathons are from the Marathon XR?

Marathons run on the wide side , my 28 is roughly a std 32,
The Plus version is quite a different tyre to the std model. I tried upgrading but couldn't mount the Plus on my rims so stayed with the std Marathon. I have pretty std Mavic road/training rims (Matrix, an old model).

I've had the same issue mounting the Marathon Plus on both a 700c Velocity rim, and a WTB Dual Duty rim. Once you pull out the tube to patch it, the tire just falls off the rim.

I like the Pluses generally, but I'm not sure about the durability of them. "Kevlar Protection" notwithstanding, I flatted on a small, bladelike piece of glass, after only about 25 miles of riding.

I had a similar thing happen with some 700x32c Panaracer Pasela Tourguard on Velocity Synergy rims. The tyre went on far too easily and it took a couple of goes to seat it and stop the tube from buldging out.

Marathon Pluses

Been home a week from a Southern Tour - my Marathon Pluses have over 4000 miles on them without a flat!!! I have 3 set on different bikes - over 10,000 miles on all them without a flat. They are a pain n the ass to mount though - I have an opposite problem from what you are describing though - they are so tight and hard rubber "not that pliable" - my current method is using a pedal strap to anchor the tire down as I mount the rest of it. This seems to work quite well

Since this has turned into a thread about more than the OP's original issue I'll add my data bits.

I haven't measured all of the Marathons I've used but in my experience they run narrow. This is specific to the Marathon XRs I currently have in 700x32c which measure exactly 28c and 26x1.9 XRs that measure exactly 1.811.

I have the 26x1.9 Marathon XRs mounted on Velocity Cliff Hangers and they went on in such a way that I could just barely get them on by hand. Not too tight a fit and certainly not loose.

The first regular Marathons I had (original design) were far too tight and I broke three plastic tire irons trying to get them on Mavic 221s and X517s.

I like Schwalbe and also really like the Continental TravelContact which I've toured with extensively. However, I wish Conti would make the Travel Contact in more sizes. I'd love to have it in 700x45c and 26x2.0. That's one of the great things about Schwalbe. Plenty of touring capable tires and a host of sizes across the board with a couple of exceptions.

Cheers,

Damn, I just ordered Velocity Dyad rims to go along with my Schwalbe Marathon XR tires 37-622 ETRTO or 700X35c I seriously hope these go together well. The tires look wicked and they were really pricey so I'd hate to have to switch them for something else since they are so venerated.

i have had the same problem as the OP. schwalbe marathons on velocity dyads. the marathons were too big for the rim, and the front tire kept popping off. it happened about 6 times, luckily, never resulting in a pinch flat. eventually, since it kept happening the bead broke off in that specific problem area. i returned the tire for a new one. it was a little on the big side, but with a little extra work i haven't had another problem. i don't know if the dyads are too small, or the marathons are too big. annoying for sure.

I posted about my troubles with marathons months ago. I was using Velocity Aeroheat's. The same width as Dyad's but in 406 ERD. I bought 8 tyres and two of them the steel beed had snapped, leading to it feeling two large for the rim and causing a blowout in one case, or the bead puncturing the inner tube in the tyre.

The other issue was that 40mm tyre on a 24mm rim is about the upper limit for sensible width. And in my case all four rims cracked after crossing Kyrgyzstan. I am reluctent to use anything wider than 35mm at high pressure on these rims again.

I have since switched to Conti sport contacts and el-cheapo Taiwanese Kenda tyres. I would much prefer the Travel Contact if they came in the right size. (Specialized Armadillo, Vittoria Randoneur pro, Schwalbe Supreme all not available in 406 at all). The marathon Plus was more difficult to fit onto the rim, but the main turn-off was the high rolling resistance (takes away half the point of touring on a faired recumbent).

i just picked up some schwalbe marathons pluses...and here i am.

i just blew my 2nd tube. the first one i did while mounting it on the rim. after i mounted it again, i pretty much had a gut feeling that i would go quickly while riding. i took it out, and it blew out on about the 3rd rotation.

i have the {dyads} - edit - i have the Synergys, and i was using gatorskin 700x28. these seem to fit perfectly. the schwalbe's are 700x32 and huge. they are so "easy" to mount, i have to actually hold them on the rim while trying to inflate the tube.

im afraid to go for a ride and end up going over the handlebars after rolling the front tire off the rim.

I rode thousands of miles with marathon pluses on my dyads. They do go on very easily, but you just need to be careful when blowing them up, check both sides of the tires carefully, all the way around, when half way up.

Hmmmm... We've had the opposite problem with our Schwalbes - they are very tight and difficult to get on. Once they're on though, they are great! We've now ridden 6000 miles and the only flats we've gotten in the Schwalbes have been from glass that managed to work its way in. There is no way thorns can penetrate.

what size of tire are you using? i'm using 700x32 and according to this chart:
https://www.schwalbetires.com/tech_in...dimensions#rim
i need to be using 700x37, which is a little too big for me.

i also found this poor guy who seemingly had the same issues:
https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/forum...e_id=76177&v=1

i am actually running synergys (i goofed on my earlier post), so the rim width is actually smaller (23 vs 24mm).

to me, one of the worst things that can happen is for your front tire to roll off the rim, so i've pretty much lost confidence in these tires.

I have run Marathon XR's, Marathon Supremes, and Marathon Racers on my Dyad rims. No flats until the sidewalls blew on the XR's after more than 7500 miles of hard touring. Marathons ROCK.

what size of tire are you using?

also, do you know any place in san diego that has a good selection of 700x32 (or larger) commuting tires?

700x37, 700x32, 700x30. 700x28 is the narrowest tire I'd use on a Dyad rim. LBS's in San Diego? Forget it. I buy everything online. Tires I buy from:

thanks for the reply. i thought maybe i was missing some place in san diego.

i got my tires from biketiresdirect.com. they sell them for $35 a pop. i'm working with them now to figure out if i need to replace these.

i run 700x28 gatorskins now, and they work great. i got my first flat, so i figured id try something new. the 700x32 marathons are way "easier" to get on compared to the contis.
