5 day tour in Aug: do san juans or okanagan valley, bc?
just can't decide which to do...if okanagan would do from osoyoos up to kelowna (stopping in each town a few days)...or do the san juans....(but aren't the san juans a bit boring in the evening vs at least the okanagan's cities of osoyoos, penticton and kelowna have more activity.
just searching around...would be with my gal who is new to cycling
(but in good shape nonetheless) with her surly LHT and me on my
riv atlatnis

Do the San Juans, then connect over to Vancouver Island and enjoy beautiful roads, parks and city life in Victoria. You'll need a passport this summer, don't forget that. Lot's of variety if you do the San Juans and Vancouver Island, much nicer than the inland area you mention.. Have fun!!

August is hot as blue blazes in the Okanagan -
But delightful in the San Juans.
Shaw is super quiet.
Lopez is perfect for me - a small village with cafe & store.
Orcas has a little more - but spread out.
Friday Harbor on San Juan Island is hopping.
Plus - Fidalgo Island is nice and Anacortes is very happenin'.
Square One Map Co. puts out a great map of the San Juans -
All the little roads, parks, campgrounds.
Free from CAA or AAA - or buy one.

FYI, from another thread, the roads were sealed and chipped recently on Lopez and San Juan. Tar with gravel on top. By August the grave; should be set in the road and/or pushed the shoulders, so it won't be so loose everywhere (just where we ride...on the shoulders). It will be bumpy as heck, though.
Lopez is great in the evening (before it gets dark). Ride towards Shark Reef, stop in town at the Lopez Island creamery for ice cream (made there). Finish the ride to the Shark Reef, park the bike, walk out to the "reef" and watch the seals play in the current between the island and the reef. That is, I don't think it's such a horrible thing to have to do...bike, eat ice cream, watch seals...on a vacation. I'm hoping to get out there this summer myself.

If it wasn't for the fact that the Okanogan can be so hot in the summer, I would do that solely for the winery visits I can do there. Some of the best ice wines I have tasted in my life are from that region.

I agree that the San Juans plus Vancouver Island are likely to be a nicer trip (I live in Victoria and never tire of promoting the area) but the Okanagan is not a bad trip either.
Osoyoos to Penticton can be done on bike paths about 2/3 of the way. The middle part is on the highway but traffic isn't too bad. The trail beside the lake the last third of the way into Penticton is wonderful.
From Penticton you can follow the Kettle Valley Railway trail (part of the TransCanada Trail) as far as you want, east or west. I understand that the bridges through the Myra Canyon section of the trail near Kelowna have been restored since the big fire a couple of years ago. If so, don't miss it, it's a wonderful ride.
I'd be less sure of riding the road between Penticton and Kelowna. The shoulders aren't too bad but there is a lot of traffic and it's much hillier than the trail. I haven't actually ridden the road, only driven, so it might not be too bad.
All that said, if I had to pick one I'd go with the west coast.
