Ahhh, my favorite sub category/culture. Not long ago I said goodby to my old early 90's steel, MTB/Touring bike and purchased a new version which I have been tinkering with.
Anyways nice to see. Nice thread.
Thanks

Hey guys! Great forum...
Scrapped together this Trek 800 Antelope last summer to get into mountain biking. Redid it this spring and am slowly upgrading components. Hope to get bar extensions, fenders, and maybe a rear derailleur at a swap this weekend. I love the way this bike rides, even though the frame is a bit too small for me, and it has now become my zombie apocalypse bike. It has quickly become that one piece of gear that you know inside and out, never fails you, and you couldn't think about trying to replace. I have racks and bags on the way, as the only touring I have done has been with a backpack and that just hurts after a few days. So trying now to do it right I can't wait to get it packed up and out on the trails!! See you on the road...

Cool paint job- I don`t think I`ve seen that on a factory Trek. Is it a redo, or was it born that way?
Your butt and your back will love the racks and bags.

Hey rodar, thanks! It just got "repainted" with rust oleum on the fork and rear tri and *gasp* the stem and bar! The main tubes I covered in black and white bumper stickers, then clear-coated the whole thing...po man paint job . Now that I have fallen in love with this bike (a bad thing, I know) she needs a name. I'll have to get back with that and with an updated photo with her payload attached.
actually going to PO to pick up the rack today, and my used bags should be on their way also. Man, I can't wait to get back on the road! Happy travels...

Very nice. Do you have any pics without the bags on it and details or problems that you ran into as you set the bike up? I've been thinking of adding a front rack to my Timberlin and making it more touring friendly.

The only problem was the rear dropouts only have one set of eyelets. Mounting fenders and a rack took some creativity. The front rack is an Old Man Mountain that mounts with the skewer.

Yeah, single eyelets are a hassle, and a longer screw isn't always the best answer. Thanks for the reply, I keep forgetting about the Old Man Mountain racks. Off to research their racks, then hopefully spending a bit of time in the garage this weekend playing around with bikes.

Hey guys, timely question about rack fitting. Ran into this problem today after snagging a used front rack at a swap. I had the Allen bolts for the fork ends, but no hardware to connect up top. Any suggestion for a mounting kit?

First of all, delete my post if this is inappropriate...
I am currently looking for a mountain bike to turn it to a touring bike. I came across a 1998 Klein Pulse Race on my local craigslist and the bike looks to be in good shape. Most of the components on this bike seem original (not the forks) and the seller is asking for $300. And my question is, is this a good bike for mountain to touring conversion? $300 seems a little steep for a 1998 bike, I might be able to haggle it down to $200-250.
I believe this is the model: 1998 Klein Pulse Race - BikePedia
What are your thoughts?
Thanks!

Here is my 1997 Kona Hahanna in touring mode. XT/SLX drivetrain, Axiom front and rear racks, Axiom fenders, butterfly bars, Cane Creek headset, Brooks B17, wheels hand built by Rocky Mountain Deore hubs on Mavic rims (only 32 spoke, but a fantastic deal)
Not pictured are the 1.75" Schwalbe marathons its riding on now. My only regret, not powder coating the frame when I had it apart/

Ive been shaking it down for a few weeks now, and the loaded ortliebs feel rock solid. Definitely further back than I intended, but the eyelets were so close to the QR skewers that my rack choices were a tad limited. I chose the Axiom uni-fit MK3 in cro-mo. Taking the rig down the Pacific Coast Highway starting this Thursday.

I have two:
1995 Trek 800 Sport
My mother currently uses this one when she needs it, I used this for a lot of years around the city. I bought this bike new with my own money all those years ago.
2010 On-One Inbred
This one is actually my daily driver, and no I do not have any issues with the big tire on the front. I am currently building an IGH for this one.

First post here, and need some advice. I picked up a Giant Rincon and am converting it into a touring bike / commuter. I picked up some butterfly handlebars (my current bike has 2 sets of bar ends, so I wanted something that added the extra hand positions without the clutter and weight). I've still added some bar ends so i have a place to mount mirrors.
But not sure where to put the shifters and brake levers.
Bad picture but I snapped it late last night with a cellphone.
I chose this setup because it didn't require replacing any cables. My first thought was having the levers and shifters flipped around (brake on the inside). Any thoughts? I don't mind spending the money on the longer cables but don't want to spend the time and money if I end up back to this setup anyway.
I'll post a full picture later this weekend. I still need to replace the cheap rack with an old tubular rack, then decide whether to add a handlebar accessory extension and a large handlebar bag or add a front rack.

I own a Klein Pulse myself. My frame is on the small side, but even if it had larger frame I don't believe the geometry is such that I'd enjoy touring on it. The geometry is way different from the Diamondback Ascent I converted to touring.

Looking good. That color was a great choice. I (like you) had the cable housing running the length of the top tube on my 29er. The Trek had a cable stop, so I cut/filed it off before p' coating.
I didn't like the idea of exposed cable on the top tube. Used to have this on a cyclocross bike. I'll get those old school bands to hold the housing.
I also plan on getting front/rear cable hangers with a QR.

Badger, I LOVE that Panasonic! I'm quite jealous, actually. Nice job with decals as well.
My '85 Rockhopper on a recent tour. Highlights include Rohloff hub, bullmoose bars and King cages.

Thanks Weasel9. What fenders do you have on your Rockhopper? I'm trying to decide on silver or black.
I don't think my hands would take an all day ride with them but dang bullmoose bars are so cool! Nice set up.

Here are a few pics of my 2005 Giant Yukon. Current mods consist of a Surly rigid front fork, 48t crank, Avid BB7s, Velocity NoBS wheelset, Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, Topeak Tourist DX rack, Brooks B17 and SLS Longboard fenders. Future mods will be to convert 8spd to 9spd, Surly front rack and butterfly bars.
