I've built a randonneur around a 1980s Peugeot PX 10 I bought off the 'Bay. With a Reynolds 531 frame, its a modern reinterpretation of the Peugeot PX 50. By converting to 650B, I was able to install a front and rear rack, sks fenders and a dynohub lighting system.

How small is small?

Bruce Gordon makes touring bikes which many people go gaga over. I think he works alone.

Independent Fabrications is a small boutique frame maker. Their Club Racer model is ideal for light touring / rando'ing (I've got one, I love it). They've also got a full touring model. https://www.ifbikes.com

Find a builder in your area. Johnny Coast is in Brooklyn. There's probably more. I think meeting and working with a builder in person would be the way to go. Another option is to check out the Handmade Bike Show builder's list, which includes a lot but not all of the small frame builders around:

thanks for the suggestions so far.

i love coast's work. i have a coast track bike that he built for me a year and a half ago and i just talked to him about another frame. his wait time is pretty long these days, so i was just exploring my options.

his frames (and he makes the velo orange frames) are so great.

Check out Bob Jackson. Their touring frame is about $900 USD full custom. Waiting time currently is about 4 months, I believe, but that isn't bad for a custom. The quality of finish on BJs is supposed to be excellent, and they look gorgeous. That would be my choice.

A year ago I had a garage fire and lost my PJF custom touring bike built in the 1970's. It's replacement, a Bruce Gordon Rock 'N Road Tour EX, is a beautiful machine. This summer my son and I road the entire Erie Canal Trail. I ended up carrying most of the gear since my son just turned 12 and needed plenty of encouragement to complete the trip. The Bruce Gordon performed flawlessly on all riding surfaces. I am extremely please with the bicycle.

I have a beautiful Roberts roughstuff that I got for a bargain. They are great builders, one of the best. The exchange rate will kill the yanks though.

For US buyers, check out circle-A cycles out of providence Rhode Island. Great work form your local anarchist-collective/framebuilders. Very reasonably priced too...

Co-motion out of Eugene OR does amazing bikes and specializes in S&S coupler options should you want to put the bike on a plane a lot.

Marinoni out of Montreal Canada is likely smaller than IF and does great work with just $150 upcharge for custom geometry. Lots of paint options too. Their touring bike is called the Tourismo and their rando bike is now called the Sportivo (available it Ti too!).

I'll second Johnny Coast.

https://www.coastouttabrooklyn.com

He's also the one who's building the rando frames for Velo Orange. You could go through VO for a semi-custom frame, or go straight to the source. My track bike is made by Coast and I can attest to its fantastic construction.
