I'm considering the "Extrawheel" trailer

I've been wanting to do a little local touring (3-4 day camping trips), and have been thinking I'd go with an ExtraWheel trailer and (depending on the route and the weight of the loaded trailer) pull it either with my Specialized roubaix (a triple) or a Specialized S-Works Tricross (compact double). I like the idea of this trailer, which of I've read good reviews. I have touyed with the idea of getting (yikes) another bike for touring, but think this is more suitable (and there is no room in the garage) The sworks tricross has no way to mount a conventional touring rack or I'd consider using it for touring.

comments? is this a viable combination for short camping trips. -

in the event I really get the touring bug, is it a viable combination for longer trips too? for REALLY long trips I could switch the tricross into a triple - wider tires AND lower gearing - though think i need different brifters to do this though - currently 2006 DuraAce compact double - they wont work for triple chainrings will they? .

Don't have personal experience with this but just thought I would bump your thread. I think the answer is yes, you can two a trailer and in fact I have read of many who have pulled one across America.

Hope someone with real experience on this will chime in.

I think his Extrawheel had to be custom-modified to take the Surly Large Marge-rimmed wheel. It seems to have worked for him, though!

The only concern I would have is about side loads imposed on a bike's frame by a trailer. I have no experience with trailers myself, so maybe someone else could address that...

I think that trailer made sense on the Canning Stock route because he was very worried about it floating over the soft, sandy, ground. There is other terrain where a large wheel would work also, grassland, ruts, etc... I don't really see the point in the situation you describe. The Extrawheel is just that. it gives you a second rear end to attach some pannier to. You still need to buy some panniers, and you have the inconvenience of no central mounding area, you have the highish center of gravity. I think the ideal trailer for average needs is the BOB. It's the go to model, while the extrawheel seems to me to be one step more specialized and less useful.

If your bike is a hardtail, I would be hard put to believe it wouldn't mount panniers in the back. A rack for 15 bucks, and some decent but cheap cordura panniers and it sounds as though you would be ready for the kind of trip you describe.

For me trailers make sense mostly when the panniers are filled to overflowing, or perhaps one needs to fit something on the bike that panniers won't hold.

From all accounts the Extrawheel is a good product so at the very least you would get a good piece of kit I am sure you could turn to some use.

??? you dont need to buy panniers. the extrawheel comes with storage bags and the means to mount them LOQ [edit, i meant LOW] , also center of gravity is much lower than a set of panniers on a rack. in fact you cant mount panniers on it, from what I've seen of the product picts and reviews. see http://www.extrawheel.com/index_en.php.

i looked at the bob, WAY heavier. requires I carry extra tires and tubes. the extrawheel is available in 700c, can use same tires and tubes as the rest of the bike. weight 8 pounds. very attractive. gets great reviews.

[edit, Extralight is not so much lighter, close to 10.7 pounds, Bob Yak is 13.5 plus carrying additional spare tire and tube]

dont think a rack is a good option for either of these bikes. a 15 dollar rack that will mount to a bike with no rack eyelets? can you provide a link? from the threads I've seen about touring on racing bikes it seems the general opinion is rack/panniers is not a great idea because of the load on a frame not designed for it and short stays. I'd like to tour with my carbon fiber Roubaix elite (when its going to be hilly because its a triple) else a Specialized s-works tricross (E5 aluminum) which has no rack mounting provision unlike the tricross sport and comp

ah well, I've ordered the trailer. I'll post reports on how it all works out.
