    Build questions for Surly LHT???

    I am new to the forum and in the process of trying my hand at building a bike. It's a Long Haul Trucker and I am trying to figure out the following:

    1) I want a Phil Wood BB. I am using a Sugino XD2-500 crank. The stock LHT's come with the Shimano BB and it list it as 110mm. I think the Sugino crank specs call for 113-118mm. I am confused!!

    2) I have a new XT long cage rear derailleur on hand. It is the Top Normal configuration....I think the stock LHT comes with the Low normal design. Will the Top normal work as well?? I am using Dura ace 9 sp bar end shifters.

    3) What is my best choice for a front derailleur?? I have heard the I.R.D. Alphina on the Harris Cyclery website is the best choice, but I am not familiar with this. Would I be better off with a Shimano XT, Ultegra or something else??

    Those are the 3 issues I have to figure out......I am chomping at the bit to get started and any information the board could provide would be greatly appreciated!!

    1)If you want a Phil Wood go for it. They're expensive but people claim they're indestructible. Another option would be to replace the 110mm hub with a 113mm hub. The Shimano UN-53 or UN-73 is fine and any bike mechanic will be able to service it.
    2)I prefer the old-fashioned low normal RDs but the XT you have will work perfectly well. Don't panic.
    3)The Alpina is a good choice. You could use a mountain FD too without any noticeable difference.

    People (myself included) get all caught up in these tiny performance details that really don't matter that much. Your bike is going to be awesome. Repeat after me, "you're bike is going to be awesome." Now quit a fussin' and go ride it!

    1) With luck someone can chime in with your exact combo and give you the numbers. Basically you want to line up your chain. The best way is to try different options, which gets real expensive if you aren't working in an environment where you can pull that stuff off the shelf. Both Harris and Spicer have these frames and parts for sale, and might be able to sort it out.

    What I did was buy a variety of the parts from Nashbar in different sizes and try them on my bike. Their sealed BB was about 12 bucks at the time.

    2) Don't know whether it maters which you use with bar ends. I am using the LX deraileurs in 8 speed.

    I am using half step and a front double myself. It depends whether the bike is specialized for touring.

    Good advice. There is a big difference between what I think about on the road relative to my bike, and what I think about when learning on here. The view from the road is much more pragmatic. Though the choices one makes can be in aid of that also.

    My LHT is using the XD600 with a 110mm UN73 BB. So far so good and the chainline is nearly perfect. The 113 or 118 will put the chainrings too far out. I've got an XD500 crankset also, other than the finish, it's identical to the XD600.

    Here's clearance with a 110mm. As for brand, that's up to you, the phil's are NICE, but then again, it is a Surly.
    Mine is XT hubs UN-73 BB, and Ultegra deraileurs coupled to Campy Chorus Ergo 10spd brifters.
