<< Yep I live in SLC so I decided to stop in at the Lone Peak store in Murray to see their operation. Just wanted to report that it is an awesome little shop with one main sewing guy and they do all their production in house (and contract out to local sewers if the rush ever gets big enough). It was an awesome shop and so psyched to know that a place like that exists. Just thought I'd let yall know that even though they have an old school website, their company is top notch. Definitely gettin panniers from them!

I've been debating on a purchase between Long Peak and Arkel panniers for a while now. I like the idea of supporting smaller scale businesses, so Long Peak is gaining my attention.

I have a Lone Peak Handle bar bag that has served me well. The prices are totally reasonable, and the products are very durable. If you plan on riding in the rain, you may want to get a rain cover though. My bag is not waterproof. Overall I would also recommend them!

Along the same lines, take a look at Aero Tech Cycling for your cycling apparel needs. Located outside Pittsburgh, they actually manufacture and sell great shorts, bibs, tights, jerseys, jackets, even gloves. I started buying from them about 4 years ago. Their shorts are durable and priced fairly, good value.

I didn`t know that! I thought they had their stuff produced "offshore"- glad I had it wrong.
As an aside, I`ve had two pairs of LP panniers (one tiny pair, one biggish pair) for maybe three years now, and I really like them for my use: several weekend tours per year and occasional commute or grocery duty when my big front bag isn`t quite big enough for the day`s load. One of the reasons I like them is because they`re very light, as panniers go. I don`t want to whine much about a product that I like so well, but IMO they aren`t the bombproof gear a lot of people want for their third world megatours. In the case of panniers, I don`t think any amount of money can buy the combination of bombproof and light, so not a knock on LP, just a heads up for anybody shopping for super rugged stuff. For not-so-rough use, or for weight conscious tourers, they get a big thumb`s up from me.

1+ on the weight issue. My large Axiom panniers are much heavier than they ought to be, due mostly to the thick stiffening material they use. The smaller ones for the front are ok in the weight department.

As for Lone Peak durability, I recall a couple who basically did a world tour. I'm pretty sure the lady replaced her Ortlieb panniers with Lone Peaks mid trip, due to durability issues. Ah, here's the link.

Big plus they are made in the US and ably marketed by The Touring Store.

I have used Lone Peak in the past and currently have one of their handle bar bags. Good stuff for a good price. FWIW I buy mine from Wayne at The Touring Store, support small businesses!

+1 on Wayne. I got Ortliebs from him this year. Discounts for matched sets. Fast shipping. Most importantly, excellent service after the sale. I was having trouble getting a solid fit on my racks. Wayne invited me to email me some photos. He wrote back with some advice and then talked to me on the phone as well. When one of the compression straps failed after the 6th use (Ortlieb's manufacturing defect), Wayne replaced it, no questions asked and before I sent back the defective one. He even sent me a return shipping label for the defective one.
