Travel Insurance

I will be leaving for a six week tour in New Zealand in Feb 2008. Does anyone have any recommendations for health and travel insurance? I'm particularly interested in recommendations from anyone who has actually had to use the insurance.

Thanks

I always get travel insurance, but fortunately have never had to use it.

I get my insurance through CAA (Canadian Automobile Association) of which I'm a member. The insurance through them is a pretty good price.

If you currently have health insurance it should cover your trip, just double check with them.

If not, then check out World Nomads. I used them for my year trip. I didn't need to claim, nor know anyone who did.

Health and travel Ins are two vastly diff ideas.....

MOST US health insurance plans HMO's etc DO NOT cover claims nor does medicare Call your existing policy holders to get the facts

Most Canadian health plans don't automatically cover you when you travel to another country either ... travel insurance is an extra bit you have to get separately. However, if you already have health insurance with a particular company you can get travel insurance through them too ... or through someone else, it's your choice.

New Zealand is known for looking after Tourists if they get sick or have a accident and not recouping the hospital fees, But I would still recommend some sort of Travel Insurance

Off Topic, I am from New Zealand and have just moved to the US, If you want any advice/help PM me,

If you have an accident in New Zealand eg fall over and break a leg etc then your medial bills are covered and over expenses like evacuation off the side of a mountain even if you are a visitor but in the case of visitors it does not cover things like disrupted travel plans

It has to be an accident though the side affect there is a “no fault” principle, and there is a complete bar to legal action for damages as a result of any accident.
here is the info https://covered.acc.co.nz

If you get sick and are a visitor you will have to pay full price for the doctor and medication a trip to the doctor would cost about $40US in that case.

And if you need to go to hospital for a sicknesses you would get treated but they would try and recover the costs so you would need a policy that covered medial but you would not need to extend that policy for adventure activity's
