West Coast Route
I am looking into doing a San Diego - Seattle tour, and am currently researching some routes. I am considering just going up Pacific Coast Highway for most of the trip since I like beach camping (at least where its legal to do so). I was wondering if anyone has any experience doing this route, or at least part of it. Does anyone have any good north-south routes through California and up into Oregon/Washington?

Have you considered going North to South? You'll get more tailwinds and the ocean will always be on your right, so you'll get better views.

You can contact the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) for some free bike maps including the coast.

Everything I have read suggests that North to South is definitely the way to go for a number of reasons including:
Wind
View of the Ocean
Width of lanes
I have ridden only a bit of the route and driven other parts, but my observations suggest that the standard advice of going N to S is good advice.

I've ridden most of it, some of it in both directions, and yes definitely go north to south. You'll also have more chance of making temporary riding friends, as almost everyone southbounds.
Great route, can't recommend it highly enough.
I used Kirkendall & Spring, adventure cycling also has maps, or you can just follow the "pacific coast route" signs. I don't think there is very much legal beach free-camping, but most of the state parks are right on the beach, and many have hiker/biker sites which are very affordable.
