So I've got a bit of a problem. I ordered some parts wholesale through a buddy and he ordered all 105 components on accident then just left town for a 3 month tour himself so I can't get a hold of him. I already had the shimano trekking crankset lying around with the bottom bracket, etc. Anyways, the question and big problem here is will the 105 group (all 10 speed stuff): if I toss all of these parts on will they work together or should I just drop the dough on a 105 triple crankset? Could that trekking crankset even work with the 10 speed stuff? Thanks in advance for responses!
I've got a triple 105 front der and the bottom bracket that matches that crankset as well as a 10 spd chain. I guess I'll just put her together and we'll see, eh? Mixed opinions all around on whether it will work or not.
It all depends on how you define "work together". With the appropriate amount of fiddling around they will shift and they will get you from point A to point B. It's unlikely they will shift well enough to satisfy the average drop bar racing snob but for touring you really don't need them to. Your front derailleur will rub on a few more gear combinations but I think worst case would be having to add a third eye or chain fang to prevent dropped chains with the funky chain line and the bottom of the front derailleur so far behind the granny ring. I personally don't like the look of the Shimano 10-speed cranks on a touring bike anyway.
