I can't speak of that bike in particular, but I do have a friend that is a long time tourist who has folding Montague tandem and has taken it on many tours. He's upgraded it a bit (Rolhoff hub, 4 sets of brakes, custom front and rear racks, etc.,). If anything, you could keep the frame and upgrade the components.
