Which BB on a Sugino XD600 crankset??
Hi,
Decided to go for a triple on my touring bike (well actually, my touring/cross bike, a Surly Crosscheck) and will probably go for a Sugino XD600 because the price is right and it seems pretty sturdy too. Now, I know it needs a JIS Square Taper BB but I don't know what is the ideal spindle lenght. The recommended lenghts are 113 OR 118. Which one should I pick for my bike? Thanks guys and gals! |

straight from the Velo Orange website:
"We recommend a 113mm bottom bracket for this crank if used on a road bike, but bikes made for wide tires, such as loaded touring bikes or mountain bikes, might need a 115mm BB." i think it all really has to do with how far apart your rear dropouts are. the wider the distance, the wider the spindle. while i in no way work for Velo Orange, i will say that they sell what appears to be a rather smart bottom bracket that you can dial in the exact chain line you need (within reason). check it out: http://www.velo-orange.com/edbobr.html |

UN-73 in either a 110 or 113mm width would probably be fine.

You can go down as low as 108mm on spindle length if a. chainstays narrow enough (they should be on steel x chk) and b. shoes not too wide (winter overboots would rub chainstays occasionally if pedal stroke not perfect). 118mm probably unnecessarily wide. People used to (some still do) talk about Q factor, and strive to achieve narrow as possible. Thus my comment about 108mm. |
I just put the XD300 on my bike. I was interested in the XD600 but it was pointed out to me that they are the exact same cranks, the XD300 just has steel rings vs. aluminum. I wasn't particular about the lighter weight so I went with the significantly cheaper XD300. Just thought i would point that out. But I also used a 113mm BB and it works fine. However, i was told that it depends on the angle/size of the dropouts like others have noted. From what I found, most BB are relatively the same and it doesn't seem worth it to me to spend a bunch of money on something I could buy for 15 dollars.
Does anybody know if nicer BB have significantly less resistance when spinning? Anyways, 113mm or 115mm would probably work fine. |

According to Sheldon Brown's site: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbsize.html the Sugino XD600 should have BB length of 113-118 mm. I have a Truvative triple on my by that works with a 113 mm length. I know others who have the same bike as me that have swapped the crankset to a Sugino XD600 and it works with the same bottom bracket.

According to Surly's website, the Surly LHT complete comes with a UN53 68x110 and uses the Sugino XD600. Though, I haven't measured mine.

People used to (some still do) talk about Q factor, and strive to achieve narrow as possible. Thus my comment about 108mm. About Q-factor, I'm odd in that I prefer my feet further apart and will probably go to a 118mm BB when I replace my current BB. |

OP, I just got a Surly LHT and had the crank swapped out at my LBS. I'm selling the original Sugino XD600 crank and BB if you or anyone else is interested. I'm not sure what the sizing is, but it of course fits since it came stock.
