I'm thinking of starting to ride into Anchorage (just a little shy of 50 miles, but getting across town probably makes up the difference) to visit some friends. Does anyone have any tips on what all I would need to bring for the trip if anything, route suggestions (Old Glenn or New is pretty much the only decision I know of, unless there's another route before the bike path starts at Peters Creek), or how much of a pain this will or will not be, since i'm still getting my basic riding legs back after a hand injury? Any guesses on ETA?

Water, lip balm, sunscreen, trail mix (AKA gorp), patch kit & pump. That's the bare minimum I'd bring. You may not need lip balm, since it seems to be more humid where you live.

If the weather forecast is for even a slight chance of rain, bring rain gear. Trust me on this one. I've been drenched far too often.

This is an excellent suggestion. I'll add that if you don't have any waterproof pants, then bring an extra pair to change into. Take it easy too. You can really hurt yourself if you overdo it.

I can't be any help with a route because I thought Anchorage was in Alaska....

I could help you to get there through British Columbia and the Yukon,but...another time

ETA...rambling your way there 4 hrs....knowing someone is making supper at the other end 2-3 hrs

I'd add one or two spare tubes, along with the patch kit. Tire levers if needed - depends on your hands and tires.

I'd also add a wind jacket and a light sweater or long sleeved shirt. 50 miles enough to encounter micro-climates. As long as you keep your body (trunk) warm, your energy can be spent pedaling.
