What failed on your touring bike?

I’m curious to know what type of bike problems you have encountered while touring. I’ve had 2 Blackburn clone racks fail – a weld failed on one and on another the triangulation stay snapped in half. I’ve had a rear Bontrager rim crack and eventually failed completely and I had a rear SunTour hub fail due to a bent axel, but it still lasted for five months!

So list your failures!

Recent trip across EurAsia:
- front rack brackets (surly)
- back rack stays (blackburn)
- rear rim (mavic, 48-spoke)
- front rim (? stock rim with T520)
- rear hub (phil wood)
- right pedal (?)
- chain snapped
- rear fender stays
Things that didn't fail:
- cables
- bottom bracket
- seat, post (though collar holding seat failed after trip)
- spokes
- derailers, hangers
- frame
- bolts, water bottle cages
Normal wear items:
- handlebar tape
- replaced one tire, one tube (total of one flat)

Nothing so far *knocks on wood*
The bike itself has about 3k miles on it, but only about 600 are loaded touring miles. It's a Surly LTH btw.

That makes three of us. And on tour last year, a person I met was having the same problem. So that is 4. Get good wheels. Take trips with a load on to be sure they are sturdy before going a long way from home.

My freehub failed. Seems to be a common problem with Formula freehubs.

I've snapped a chain, I think thats the worst of it. I gues I'm lucky. My friend had a cheap rack and it cracked the second day through Ireland.

Aside from the occasional flat tire, a couple of broken spokes and a few minor adjustments, I've had the following in the last five years:
  • The mounting hardware for a Blackburn clone front rack snapped in half
  • The mounting hardware for a pair of Lugger panniers came off
  • My brakes wore out coming down a mountain pass in the rain last fall. I didn't know something had gone wrong until I came to a red light and couldn't stop...

> You killed a phil hub? Wow.

Some of the paws didn't always click into place. I suspect I broke off some of those that did a bit at a time. At some point they all had and it spun freely in both directions. Phil Woods replaced it under warranty after I returned.

Conditions in crossing Russia were fairly tough with ~1000 miles of gravel road. I'm not light and I was fully loaded. However, before I switched to 48-spoke Phil Wood hubs, I had broken three rims on a previous trip across Canada.

Cut and ruined a tire on a rock. Tire was unridable and unfixable; had to hitch a ride to the next town. It was a small town w/no bike shops; had to buy a tire off a guy's bike and mail him back a new one when I reached the next town.

Beside the usual, my right hand brifter went south on me once. It sucked not being able to change gears as easily as one would like. Another great reason to use bar ends, but with that being said, I still use STI. We learn from history only to learn nothing from history.

Just like a car trip, I have my bike checked out before I go. So far a couple flat tires. On my touring bike, I was not happy with the original spokes, so I upgraded them.

Do you have website or blog of your trip it sounds epic.

I tried https://www.fietstocht.com/ in your personal details but nothing loads up.

Flats, of course, and my right hand Deore DX shifter.

Not on tour but my left hand Deore XT shifter died on me last year. Just replaced it a couple of days ago.

I’m curious what went wrong with your Blackburn lowrider rack. I have one and so far no problems at all, but I am looking for something stronger and proven to be bombproof.

I've trashed two rear derailleurs and a rear axle. Plus bending a handlebar when I took the tourer off-road. None of the problems left the bike totally unrideable. I was always able to get to a bike shop for replacement stuff.
