multi-day trip w/o much extra gear?

I'm considering riding from north Georgia to Savannah, Ga and back during my break between summer and fall classes. I estimate it to be just over 300 miles each way. My plan is to ride it with not much more gear than i take on any other ride, just probably a small pack with extra tubes, water, snacks, kits, ect. I only weigh 140 lbs and feel like bringing a lot of gear would slow me down considerably. Anyhow My plan would be to time a good break in any weather and just ride down sleeping where ever is convenient, I would then stay in a motel in Savannah for a few days to re-coup and head back home whenever an other good break in the weather presented itself (hopefully only a few days after arriving). Anyhow I would just be riding my regular road bike. So my question is; have any of you attempted such a trip w/o a touring type setup/ gear, and if so was it a mistake?, and secondly what is the best way to plan a specific rout for such a trip. Again, this is just in the initial stages of planning, but any feedback/ ideas would be appreciated, thanks..

Depending on what type of saddle you have, you may want to invest in a nice, large saddle bag and or handlebar bag. A cheap alternative for the handlebar bag is one made by Schwinn, which can can be found at your local target, and had for ~15. It's big enough to hold your keys/wallet/phone/etc. and maybe a change of clothes and some snacks. it also has a nice clear vinyl flap on the outside for a map.
Hope this helps and good luck! Most importantly, HAVE FUN!

I have seen websites of people who have toured extensively with a minimalist setup. There are plenty of large saddlebags that can go on almost any bike. Carradice is kinda the standard it seems, but there are others. A good saddlebag and handlebar bag would likely give you more than enough room to carry everything you would need, as long as you don't need extensive camping gear.
