nashbar trailer failure. Just put a dent in my current tour

go to set up camp just a few hours ago and noticed my trailers tubing had snaped! WTF. I have to go get it welded tomorrow and limp on until I can get a replacement (out of stock) overnighted or swap out for panniers. I'm pissed. They are being helpfull but I'm really dissapointed in the quality of this thing. Snapped right up front by the hinge bracket away from the weld. The tube just snapped. The thing was not abused or overloaded once. I haven't even had a flat this trip. Smooth sailing

Look for photos at. Ianplusjasononbikes.blogspot.com

Ps my previous steering issue was a notchy headset. Got that fixed and the trailer WAS working fine

I have had great success with mine, I would say you can get a bad weld no matter what you got.
Now the earlier trailers had weak tow arms, Nashbar will replace them. I did and my new trailer is way tougher than the old one.

I knew a guy bought a brand new Cannondale and it had a weld crack. Sorry to hear about your trip problem...

I would think your amp may be a bit heavy, but only you know that.
If I am hauling much over 30LBS I will use a two wheeled trailer.

Stress riser right at the edge of the plate. Get the welder to do more than just the tube. Tapered reinforcing plate. Spread the stress out over more tube length. A good fellow used to doing car roll cages and the like should be able to handle the ad hoc design!

Ha you guys won't believe this bit grave diggers monstertruck home barrage the dungeon is a 1/4 mile down the road. I'm going to see if they can't help me out. Either that or grave digger might not even have a soul and just crush my trailer with his *****in monstertruck

Remember guys I said not at a weld. Just the tubing failed.

Yeah thats unacceptable, I can understand welds failing, but tubing should not, especially on this type of equipment, unless it was over loaded, which I don't think it was.

Either bad design putting too much stress on a single part or bad tubing.

i860, the photo you showed on you blog shows that the crach is next to the last beed of the weld that attaches the plate to the tubing. That weld acts like a stress riser and is why the tube failed. From what I was able to notice, it looks like the weld is pretty solid.

What mandovoodo is suggesting would distribute the stess the plate is putting onto the tubing better. more surface area for a weld distributes the stress better. I think having the plate extended to the support the bends in the tube will create an increadibly stronger trailer for you. Give me a few to photo shop what I'm thinking (actualy, I'm using Gimpshop)

Don't forget to get pics of you racing the grave digger

Well given where it is made and most likely by the lowest bidder...

A proper weld should never fail, it is stronger than the material around it. Sounds like some crap tubing or poor engineering (if any)

From my experience with Nashbar, CALL em, tell them, Order a new trailer speedy freight, I bet they will pay the shipping to send yours back. They did me, and my new version of the trailer is a much tougher unit.

ok. So I took the trailer up to gravediggers garage and it was fing sweet. Welded me up and I got to check out all the monstertrucks of my boyish dreams. Fast forward to five o'clock get a reartire flat (uggh) go to put the rear axle back on and before the thing gets snug it just snaps and is stuck in the one of the quick disconnect recievers used to hold the axle..... Great. Call up nashbar to see about getting a spareor just anew trailer sent. Out of stock...

I'm done with this damn trailer. Stated the night at a fire house camped up in their back yard ( they let me play with all the cool gear and trucks ) called up nashbar and I'm havingthem rush ship me a front rack and some bigger bags down the road. Luckily i brought the spare axle so I'm going to have this one reciever tapped and hapefully be rolling on

Ps: monstertrucks and firetrucks all in one day! Rad! What could be next!?

glad you had fun with the gravedigger trucks. too bad nasbar don't make goods like those trucks. i've stripped their chinese made bolts before and would rather buy someone's ebay junk then having to deal with nashbar again.

If you want a single wheeled trailer I've had BOB trailers for many years now and they have been reliable for cargo hauling around town. I tour with panniers though - nothing against trailers - I just prefer it.
