Quality rims, how do you tell?

How can you tell the differences between rims? Say a 36 hole touring rim from Alex, Mavic, Salsa, Velocity, how do you distinguish the performance besides weight?

In my case, reputation. There are different ways of getting the same level, or sufficient performance. So there wouldn't be one factor that would tell all.

reputation is defintally biggest.

other than that, eyeleted rims are better than non, i belive welded is better than pinned, i perfer machined sidewalls to non (despite what rivendell says) and you can look at things like the seam where the rim is joined, generally better quality means it is less obvious.

Another thing you can look at before the rim is built is how straight it is before putting any tension on the spokes, generally higher quality means tighter tolerances but you still get the occasional rim that is usually regarded as the best out there that comes kinda warped before tensioning so take that with a grain of salt.
