Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Ian Hibbel. He rode literally around the world several times. It's a pretty well written memorial article.

Perhaps you should care about a fellow cyclist?

But it's not required of you to care...

Why do you assume he doesn't care? Anyone can post spam to Bike Forums, and there's no indication the link wasn't, say, an ad for B-k-s D-r-ct.

Yes, the Economist has a long standing relationship with Bikes Direct.

Still, my point was you cannot assume an unidentified link is OK.

I will remember to refrain from posting anything in the touring forum unless its pertains to the LHT, Brooks saddle or Ortliebs. Any discussions of actual touring experience, or notice of the roadside death of inspirational individuals will be left at the door.

My everlasting chagrin,

Psssh, if anything the lesson should be to post a better title/message. A bit more information would probably lead people to your thread and clicking the link.

As kuan pointed out, it doesn't matter what the thread was titled or how the link was described.

If you're going to mistrust a link because of what is written AROUND it, then don't click on it and move on to another thread.

You forgot stealth camping. That's a topic approved by the "touring community" - AKA, a dozen mouths on Bike Forums.

Right.

Even better would have been to post this link (with a better message) in the thread we already have here about Hibel.

Oddly the last stealth camping thread had around 25 "mouths" feeding at the trough.

I wasn't at all aware of who Ian Hibell was. I'd never seen him mentioned on any forum or journal repository until his death.

I enjoyed the Economist article to a degree. I clicked on the link just for the hell of it after I saw where the link led.

The fact is, the man died doing what had become his life passion. I hope I live as long and am able to boast the breadth of experience he did.

Ian Hibell, world renowned cyclotourist and author of Into the Remote Places, was struck and killed by a car on August 23rd while on tour in Greece.
Sad, thousands of miles, decades of touring, hit and killed by someone driving a car, sad.
